Fall Creators Update Resulting in High CPU Use By Service Host

Hi,

After updating to the new version, I am seeing high CPU use from two processes:

Any ideas on how to make them not use a lot of CPU so that my laptop cools down and the fan stops blowing?

Hi all, 

Had the same problem myself and found the solution which is quite simple :

Go to settings -> update & security -> Windows Defender -> Open Windows Defender -> Firewall & Network protection

Then you need to disable the firewall for all the types of networks

once that's done click on restore settings

That should do the trick and you're cpu usage should return to normal.

    Thanks Jean-Baptiste!  That fixed it for me.  I think I'd tried that before - but I only turned it off for one type of network (I assumed, wrongly, that it would turn it off for all).  Turning it off for all three - and then resetting has fixed the issue.  Superb.

    There are a couple of different ways to get to the "Services" list.  The screen capture above that I posted may be a little confusing in that it's the one that is accessed via MSCONFIG, also called the System Configuration app.  I think it only shows the status (running, disabled, etc) of services.

    The services list I actually used to disable ICS is one I accessed via Windows Administrative Tools/Services where Windows Admin Tools should be in your Programs list and Services under it.  That one allows changing the status of the services.   I rechecked mine and the right-click or "context" menu for ICS is greyed out (with ICS showing disabled still), but you can choose Properties in that case and under the "General" tab get a drop down menu to change the "startup type" for ICS.

    Hope this works for you, I have not had the problem at all since I disabled ICS on 10/10/2017...............................Jim

    It seems to me that it's not the ICS service that's at fault here, but rather its dependency, the Base Filtering Service, which is also showing high CPU use.

    I eventually managed to mark the ICS service as disabled after killing it in the taskmanger. However when I rebooted the ICS service reverted to Manual startup (triggered) and is marked as starting.

    Can't be disabled. I have checked if sharing is enabled on any of my interfaces (and its not).

    CPU runs ~30% on just ICS and its dependent services - ICS never actually starts (so trying to stop in the services.msc wont work because the started state is never reached).

    Laptop is not unusable!

    edit - I have also updated a surface pro 3 and all is fine!
