Fall Creators Update Resulting in High CPU Use By Service Host

Hi,

After updating to the new version, I am seeing high CPU use from two processes:

Any ideas on how to make them not use a lot of CPU so that my laptop cools down and the fan stops blowing?

Hi all,

Had the same problem myself and found the solution which is quite simple :

Go to settings -> update & security -> Windows Defender -> Open Windows Defender -> Firewall & Network protection

Then you need to disable the firewall for all the types of networks

once that's done click on restore settings

That should do the trick and you're cpu usage should return to normal.

Hope it helps, it did for me.

Unpluging LAN cable during the install procedure (I let it till teh end of install), fixed it and no issues after a week

I had my very first install work with LAN cable.

Only changes in the next failed installs were:
- added a user credential in my Netgear NAS to allow login to SMB share since MS changed the way Enterprise editions negociate access to smb (aka dropping the guest without prompting for access credentials to the server)
- turned on my NAS before setting up the proper Workgroup name in windows 10
However, I didn't try to reproduce the issue with LAN cable plugged in and the NAS turned off as I am happy with my working install

Hope these info help others to reinstall windows (only really working proper fix) and helps MS to fix the issue

I don't understand.

Norton is the firewall I use. If I go to Windows Defender it states "no action needed" Norton Security is installed as a firewall protector.

If I switch off the Norton firewall the CPU usage does not change.

If I look in services it shows Windows Firewall running although Windows anti virus is stopped. It would appear that both firewalls are running.

If I go to Control Panel - windows defender firewall it states Norton is managing the firewall. If I click on turn windows defender firewall on or off nothing happens.

Windows firewall does not seem to appear in the services panel of task master.

You refer to the driver download, what driver is that?

I am just don't know what to do next. I never had any problems before this major update.

I have exactly the same problem. I want to try the firewall solution but my firewall is provided by Norton. I switch it off but Defender tells me to switch it back on. How do I get Windows Firewall to take over from Norton?

Ignore the instructions to enable firewall protection [BOTH Norton's AND Defender's] until AFTER the driver dowlnoad - then after the download - re-enable it. Your firewall protection will only be down for the few moments it takes to download the driver, and if you are downloading directly from the driver company's site you should be just fine for the few moments it is disabled.
