Display problems on some AMD Radeon video cards after installing an update

An update was recently installed and now my AMD Radeon HD 3200 display adapter is not working as it did before. I’ve lost my preferred resolution option and the ability to use multiple monitors, and the adapter type is now reported as Microsoft Basic Display Driver. Any suggestions?

Hi Shirlen,

We are aware of a problem that resulted in an incorrect driver update for some AMD Radeon HD 2000, 3000, and 4000 series adapters.

(Updated: 12/18/17)

If you were impacted by the incorrect driver, Windows Update KB4057291 has been released that will install a driver to restore multi-monitor display and resolution control capabilities.  Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install the update to resolve your issue.  You can also go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website to install the update.

(With the release of Windows Update KB4057291, it should no longer be necessary to manually delete the improper driver, as was originally recommended below.)

*****

Follow these steps for all versions of Windows 10 to manually delete the 22.19.128.0 driver from the system and recover the recommended driver version (8.970.100.9001):

  1. Start Device Manager. To do this, press and hold (or right-click) the Start Menu icon, and then select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters, right-click the adapter that has the problem driver installed, and then select Properties.
  3. Select the Driver tab and verify driver version is 22.19.128.0.
  4. Select Uninstall Device.
  5. Check the box that says, "Delete the driver software for this device.” This step is important and will prevent the problematic driver from reinstalling in the future.
  6. The system may require a reboot at this point. Reboot if needed, then reopen Device Manager.
  7. Select any device, then click Action -> Scan for hardware changes.
  8. Recheck the driver version.  If it still reports 22.19.128.0, repeat steps 4 to 7 until the recommended driver (8.970.100.9001) is re-installed.  If this resolves your graphics problems, you can stop here.  If a different driver version is installed, follow the next step to check for the driver using Windows Update.
  9. Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install any available updates.

    Hi  Henry,

    no other suggestion.

May be somebody from Microsoft will have a look at this thread, and will have an idea...

May be a correction or a new Windows 10 version ("1803" or "1804"?) will solve your

    problem...

    Happy New Year!

    Hello Wayne,

Yes, this is my current "problem". Very weird and no-one seems to know why!

The only thing I know is that, when I decide to upgrade my graphic card, I'll move to nVidia which never gave me any problem in the past!

I see...you have 1920/1080  display resolution but the recordings in Settings > System > Display > Resolution show 1600/1200 ...is that right?

Strange.  Might want to leave good enough alone on that one unless you experience further difficulties.

You could also mess with the resolution settings to see if they readjust.

    Regards

    Hello Wayne,

I don't wish to roll back to a previous AMD/RADEON driver.

So far, the latest AMD/RADEON driver does the trick, inasmuch as I got back my original 1920 x 1080 definition.

My only current problem is that Windows doesn't recognize it as a 1920 x 1080 definition. but as a 1600 x 1200 definition.

This is squarely a Windows 10 problem.

    Regards,

    Henry

    Hi Henry,

Have you tried another method of fixing your problem by rolling back the driver to a previous version, done this way?

Right click Start Menu > right click Device Manager > Expand Display Adapter > right click YOUR listed display adapter > right click Properties > left click DRIVER TAB at top > left click rollback driver > answer question previous driver worked better > click YES.
