Display problems on some AMD Radeon video cards after installing an update

An update was recently installed and now my AMD Radeon HD 3200 display adapter is not working as it did before. I’ve lost my preferred resolution option and the ability to use multiple monitors, and the adapter type is now reported as Microsoft Basic Display Driver. Any suggestions?

Hi Shirlen,

We are aware of a problem that resulted in an incorrect driver update for some AMD Radeon HD 2000, 3000, and 4000 series adapters.

If you were impacted by the incorrect driver, Windows Update KB4057291 has been released that will install a driver to restore multi-monitor display and resolution control capabilities.  Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install the update to resolve your issue.  You can also go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website to install the update.

(With the release of Windows Update KB4057291, it should no longer be necessary to manually delete the improper driver, as was originally recommended below.)

Follow these steps for all versions of Windows 10 to manually delete the 22.19.128.0 driver from the system and recover the recommended driver version (8.970.100.9001):

  1. Start Device Manager. To do this, press and hold (or right-click) the Start Menu icon, and then select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters, right-click the adapter that has the problem driver installed, and then select Properties.
  3. Select the Driver tab and verify driver version is 22.19.128.0.
  4. Select Uninstall Device.
  5. Check the box that says, "Delete the driver software for this device.” This step is important and will prevent the problematic driver from reinstalling in the future.
  6. The system may require a reboot at this point. Reboot if needed, then reopen Device Manager.
  7. Select any device, then click Action -> Scan for hardware changes.
  8. Recheck the driver version.  If it still reports 22.19.128.0, repeat steps 4 to 7 until the recommended driver (8.970.100.9001) is re-installed.  If this resolves your graphics problems, you can stop here.  If a different driver version is installed, follow the next step to check for the driver using Windows Update.
  9. Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install any available updates.

    The updating was when it started. These HP Microservers don't have GPU slots. Well this one doesn't. I updated 3 laptops and 4 desktops with no issues. Just the 2 HP ProLiant Microservers with the same chipset and current driver version. Bought them because storage and lack of driver issues. Hah. No exotic hardware. New update and I can't serve files reliably. Inactivity or if I'm lazy and nothing else is on and I watch videos, makes no difference. Random VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE bluescreen. I'd love some other causes.

    The problem started when Microsoft released their Fall version of Windows 10.

    It is utterly pathetic, and not acceptable, that they didn't not address this issue.

    UPDATE: I now have a VERY weird issue! 

    My desktop gives me a basic resolution of 1600 x 1200  but, whenever I visit a facebook site, the resolution on this facebook page is 1920 x 1080!

    I now have two resolutions on my desktop! Never heard of that one!

    Hi Henry,

    what is the exact version of your graphics card? 

    If it is an ATI Radeon 2000, 3000, or 4000, I am afraid you have to use the driver provided

    by Microsoft.

    If it is a more recent card (for instance 5000), see previous entry: your card should be supported

    by AMD, and driver provided by AMD could be better than driver provided by Microsoft...

    To resume things:

    1. I have an AMD RADEON R7 350 series graphic card which I purchased a couple of years ago
    2. Everything was working fine until the end of November. I managed to to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution
    3. Then, following a Windows 10 update (64-bit), this highest resolution suddenly became unavailable and the highest resolution available dropped to 1600 x 1200.
    4. I naturally contacted AMD Support Service who, after many exchanges of messages, told me it was a Microsoft well-known documented issue and NOT an AMD issue.
    5. I downloaded the Microsoft patch mentioned here which is supposed to solve this problem. It didn't not solve the problem.
    6. I made a thorough unsintsall AMD driver hoping that Windows 10 version 1709 would manage my graphic card. It created more problems :

    a) Windows 10 did NOT recognise my RADEON card but instead listed it as a Basic Windows Card. 

    b) It was desactivated. I had to reactivate it and the only two resolutions available were 1024 x 768 and 800 x 600!!!

    1. I therefore had to install the lastest AMD RADEON driver for my card, namely driver 17.12.2.

    Following this, I couldn't get back the original high resolution of 1920 x 1080 but, at least, I could get back the 1600 x 1200 resolutions.

    There are millions of persons using AMD RADEON cards. Why can't Microsoft solve this problem?

    Depends on what Version you are using.  Determine what Version you are using as follows.

    Click Start menu > Settings > System > About (bottom left panel) > Scroll to Windows specifications > Determine Version.

    Determine architecture as well.  You find your architecture in the same area as Version information but below it under System Specifications > System type.

    Now go to the Microsoft Software Catalog and down load the appropriate update with appropriate architecture...64bit vs 32bit below.
