The windows 10 fall upgrade 1709 fails after about 45% mark.. Then gives an error message and returns system to 1703

I have tried all the suggestions on my laptop to complete the upgrade to fall creators 1709.

I have tried the trouble shoot the upgrade (It always fins registry errors after the update...  I run it a couple of times and the second time the registry errors are gone but come back after trying the 1709 update)

I have tried the upgrade by doing the manual update

I have tried resetting all of update... and then trying the update again

I have tried by unplugging the Ethernet cable

I have done a chkdsk c: /f

I have tried Regcure pro (as recommended by Microsoft on a support page - they are a Microsoft partner)

I have tried going back to earlier backups of the laptop..

All end in the same way...

The updates fail after 45% with a old style popup box .. saying windows can not configure one of the system components...

I have tried many options...  but no solution...

I have spent over 80 hours working on this issue...  I really do not want to do a full reinstall of the laptop....

Help!!!

    no joy.

no errors detected during either memory diagnostic or chkdsk

ran the windows update assistant this time - same problem.

using ethernet. no wifi adapters connected. was using a tplink for a while. cant find any references to this in programs and features, program files or program files x86 dir. or device manager

while looking through event viewer i also found reference to diagnostics-performance referencing my old nvidia gtx660. this log was 12 days old and i havent had that card for 12months and its not in device manager, hidden or otherwise.

    21/1/18 the event viewer says

The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.

when i click details: DisplayDeviceFriendlyName">NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660

is it somehow confused with my graphics card? i replaced that card feb 2016.

i did note that at 45% during the upgrade, its just after the screen goes off and on without a reboot, so its doing graphics. i am running dual monitors.

    onedrive is disabled

    nvidia driver is 388.71

    windows features, enabled are:

    IE11

    legacy components - directplay

    media features - wmp

    microsoft print to pdf

print and document services - internet printing client and windows fax and scan

    remote differential compression api support

    smb 1.0/cifs file sharing support

    telnet client

    windows powershell 2.0

windows process activation service - config apis and process model

    xps services

    xps viewer

    Hi Richard,

Based from the log file that you've provided, it seems that some hardware such as your memory (RAM) and hard drive are contributing to file corruption which leads to the errors that you are experiencing. We highly recommend performing a memory diagnostic and disk integrity check.

To perform a memory diagnostic, kindly follow the steps below:

    1. Search for Windows Memory Diagnostic using Cortana, and then click on it.
    2. A pop-up box will appear. Click on Restart now and check for problem (recommended).

After performing a memory diagnostic, kindly run the check disk utility. Follow the instructions below:

    1. Right click the Windows logo and then click on Command Prompt (Admin).
    2. Type chkdsk/ f and then press Enter.
    3. Press Y and then press Enter.
    4. Restart computer.

    Let us know the outcome.

Reading your log I would suspect something with the network driver. Are you connected via the LAN or do you have a WiFi dongle or a WiFi card?

The fix for me was during the installation remove my WiFi dongle. So it was not present during the USB initialization process during the upgrade. Then I got past the 45% and the upgrade worked. Then I could connect my WiFi dongle again.

Also having an Asus motherboard with an onboard WiFi adapter. For an earlier upgrade of Windows 10 I did have to disable that onboard WiFi adapter to get the upgrade to work. Otherwise I would get an BSOD and a sad face during my upgrade. That was why I bought a USB WiFi dongle in the first place. (also Asus.)

i have the same problem and have attempted the upgrade 10 times now. this is a massive waste of my time and its really annoying me. And the worst thing is, microsoft keep forcing a broken update on me.

    HW:

    Asus Z87-Plus

    i7 4771

    Nvidia 970GTX

    Samsung EVO 840 SSD

    2TB WD

    320GB WD Black

    Pioneer BD/DVDRW

at 45% i get a box popping up saying it cannot configure one or more windows system components.

    I have:

deleted the software distribution folder and let windows recreate it

    used the update assistant

downloaded the image and tried that

deleted the pending file rename from the registry

    run sfc and dism

deleted most of the hidden device manager items - only one had drivers as an optional uninstall which i did. none of the devices were connected and its likely they wont be reconnected. if they are, i'll reinstall drivers

individually 'update driver' on every non hidden device manager item. i think 2-3 updated, the rest were fine

deleted razer synapse (it has since been reinstalled since it didnt fix it). this has had issues previously with upgrades.

iv just found a log file and the stuff that looks interesting, in $windows.~BT/Sources/Rollback/setupapi/setupapi.dev

Hi and thanks for your help.

I have tried disconnecting everything I all but to no avail.

Could it be a software conflict?

I have tried removing my (Norton) antivirus. Still fails.

Giving up hope now .... :(

The suspicion is that a old/broken device driver is the problem...  but short of deleting all devices (and hidden ones too) [This is not a good approach.. but similar to doing the complete reinstall of Windows]...  it is difficult to find the cause of the update failure...

    This is definitely frustrating....
