The windows 10 fall upgrade 1709 fails after about 45% mark.. Then gives an error message and returns system to 1703

Thanks. I finally found the solution to my problem here: https://forums.iis.net/t/1229869.aspx. The Wireless broadcom driver, even after uninstalling leave some registry entries that caused the problem. I de-activated the Wireless device in BIOS, removed the driver completely, did not allowed Windows Update to update the driver and finally went thorugh the registry and deleted every reference to Broadcom I could find. "After a bunch of digging, I found my problem was that my Broadcom Wireless driver had added some registry keys to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Cryptography\Providers and iissetup.exe was just picking the first provider from the list, which was the Broadcom one, and failing."

After i did that, I also proceed with the USB-ISO created installation(Setup) without any connection to Internet (unplug Ethernet cable) and I also clicked to not make updates before installing(which is the recommended option during setup).

Then I am now with 1709 with latest January updates. Wireless Broadcom driver is back enabled up and running as well. 

My 2012 Optiplex has been failing the 1709 update for the last 5 months and this finally fixed it.  I have not used a broadcom wireless adapter in years and the software had already been removed but the registry entries above were present.  Once I removed them the 1709 update finally went through.  Thank you for figuring this one out and posting to the community!

After reading the whole comment I think it will be faster if I just do a clean reinstall of my windows.

After struggling for some time with very helpful suggestions... I finally gave up and did a clean install on Windows...  It cost me money for some re-licencing of some application products....  but the problem is behind me...

I still say... Shame on Microsoft!  It should not have been that difficult!

I have the same exact issue. I have attempted to use the media creation tool to install the Windows 10 fall creator update, but it always fails to configure at exactly 45%, just like the original poster. Not sure what to do, at this point I'm willing to look for ways to disable Windows update, because it isn't going to work, and wiping my drive is pretty much the same thing I would have to do if my device got irreversibly infected due to having outdated security anyways. Therefore there is no real benefit to counter that kind of loss.

I spent (wasted) way too much time trying to get this update to work.,..  I ended up performing a complete reinstall on my laptop....  It required that I repurchase some licences (3rd party software)...  but now I am up to date and no problems...  

The problem with deferring this update is that you miss vital security updates....

Try some diagnosis?  We were making progress but the OP gave up too soon.  Look back at the previous couple of pages if you want to try it too.  Getting rid of printer support would be reasonable guess without any other clues.
