Windows Defender - Virus and spyware definitions couldn't be updated

Yes, I have tried what was suggested on this forum which wasn't very much including:

1. running the update troubleshooter  - didn't find anything
2. looking at the disk space and cleaning up any bad files - none identified

That is it so far.

can't update spyware and virus definitions

I get notification that my anti virus needs updating but when i try to do it i get a notice saying it cannot be completed, check internet or network connection, i know i am connected also there is an error code 0x80070718

For those of you who reporting difficulty with Definition Updates and you are on Windows 10 version 1703 and 1709, there is a new Windows Defender Security Center. Does the same thing happen when you attempt from there?
