[Partially Fixed] Intel + NVIDIA Laptop Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

  • Update Intel HD 630 driver to 24.20.100.6194+
  • Update NVIDIA Driver to 398.36+

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes. 

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer) ~~>~~Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

    Intel driver: 24.20.100.6194

    The freezes are still there from time to time.

    ex: Opening chrome made a freeze 1 time.

    Locking the session (Winkey + L) trigger dGPU and make a freeze every time.

    Youtube on Edge same ****, freeze on first launch.

    If you kill dwm.exe , all the freeze will be back for at least 1 time.

    WARNING: If you disable and re-enable the Intel GPU (or update it's driver), the issue will appear solved but you will notice that the dGPU never disable now. So it is artificially fixing the problem until a reboot.

    So all user with 165 who updated the Intel driver to 6194 may encountered this and thought it was fixed while in fact it is not.

    Could you please further test 17134.165 instead of arguing?

    I'll also do my own tests and update the thread accordingly.

    same here. 

    TrayPwrD3 is off and all looks good.

    Note that when you right click taskbar and run Task Manager, dGPU is triggered, but the good news is that it is seamless with no stutter or freeze. Looks like root cause may have been fixed.

    I'm very optimistic. Thanks MS! but it did take at least 20 months of this nonsense after all.

    Apparently the problem was solved...

    Windows Build: 17134.137 (with all updates installed)

    Nvidia driver: 398.36

    Intel driver: 24.20.100.6025

    Not sure what update make the problem go away.
