Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

Partially Fixed as of June 26, 2018.

  • Please Update to Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165+
  • Update Intel HD 630 driver to 24.20.100.6194+
  • Update NVIDIA Driver to 398.36+

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes.

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer) ~~>~~Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

Has anyone found out why triggering the dGPU results in stuttering in the first place?

I have restarted my PC a few times just to be sure, and the problems seem resolved. In the latest version 1709 (which shipped with my pc) i didn't have any problem. When I have updated to 1803, I couldn't even control the brigthness of the screen, the integrated GPU wasn't recognised or indicated as "not workin(error 63)". The nvidia gpu was always working (I use the utilization icon), and now it is always off.

Power consuption seems the usual one, but maybe I need some more days to analyze better.

tl;dr : my PC (asus N580VD) is now working as expected (or at least for now)

EDIT: the NVIDIA driver seems properly installed (the witcher 3 now working as usual)

EDIT2: It seems that the gtx1050 doesn't work only with the battery, I have to use the AC to utilize it

This does not solve the issue, unfortunately. I always install intel drivers like this, because Dell doesn't allow installing through the exe file if it's from intel, only if it's from their website (Which is an ~8 month old driver). Did you restart your PC after installing? Is your nvidia driver properly installed? What's your idle/stressed/browser using power consumption?

There are no proper fixes or workarounds, the ONLY proper ("sort of") fix is the insider build, otherwise there is something wrong with the PC, usually the dGPU is always on or it never swithes on.

I have found a solution for my laptop, asus N580VD on the list (7700hq, gtx 1050). After the update to windows 1803, my system didn't recognise the intel 630HD, causing the nvidia to do all the work. I had stuttering and i couldn't play certain games either. I read on an italian forum a way to install the latest intel graphics driver (intel version 24), and it solved all the problems for me.

    The procedure is:

-Download the latest intel graphics driver in .zip format

    -unzip it

    -open "device manager"

    -Click on "video card"

    -right click on "intel 630HD"

    -click on "update driver"

-Click on the second option to find the files on your pc

    • click on "choose from file" (the latter option)

-Click on "driver disk" or something similar

    • click on "choose"
    • go into the directory where you have unzip the driver you have downloaded
    • choose the file called "igdlh64.inf" in the folder "Graphics ", inside the unzipped driver

    -click ok

wait till the installation is finished, then restart. For me it worked, and now the system is usable as before. I don't know if this works for other PC other than mine, but this method doesn't require some modified driver or external program.

I'm not native english speaker, so maybe I could have mispelled some part

EDIT: I have downloaded this driver Intel graphics driver

EDIT2: For clarification, the latest driver released by asus for my PC is Intel graphics driver V23 (released on february)

The same problem exists. I installed the 1803 update. It got stuck and froze. While listening to music, the music was included during the movement of the cursor, including music. I had to return to the previous pace again. I think many windows users will use different operating system instead of windows operating system if there is no solution in a short time. MSI PL62 7RC (MX150)

    User.

I had no problem with MSI PL62 7RC (MX150) on 1709. 1803 made things even worse, that's for sure. You can try the Insider Preview or get all the updates via Windows Update.
