[Partially Fixed] Intel + NVIDIA Laptop Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes. 

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer) ~~>~~Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

    Hahaha, I was about to say the same thing: the first thing I have done on my Razer Blade is to swap the Killer wi-fi card with an Intel 8265. Killer sucks at everything, poor wi-fi signal, poor Bluetooth. Glad I am not the only one who noticed that.

    On topic: I am using the Skip Ahead 17672 and I am positive that a fix will come(this year). I can confirm "First time video playback with Edge" is still there, but "Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze" -  I don't have this issue.

    What I did noticed is when you change the resolution it triggers the dGPU and freezes. So there are still some freezes but hopefully Microsoft will fix them soon.

    I dont think it has anything to do with killer card!I swapped my razer blade's killer with intel 8265 because of bluetooth connection problems a year ago.

    So i have found the source of all the lag in windows 10 1803 and it just so happens that all the brands us killer ethernet lan driver, go to start, type services and search for killer network service and right click and click stop/ open properties and disable, i found that when this is enabled it kills your internet laptop upload speed and cause microsoft edge and microsoft store and desktop to lag or freeze, the best solution is to factory restore your laptop with manufactoree disk and the reinstall the fall creators update 10 1709 hope this helped

    Killer has nothing to do with our issue bro...

    Faced slight stuttering problem with my Clevo laptop with HD 4000 and 650M in Creators Update. It was bearable. It got worse with the April 2018 update, but I thought I had to live with it because I have an old laptop on Ivy Bridge. It was screwing up the mouse response in my Bluestacks game. Didn't know it's a 3 year old problem. 

    Reinstalling the latest drivers for both graphics reduces the problem greatly, but it's still there. Kudos to Nvidia for the continuing updates which work. Waiting for you, Intel, to release drivers that follow the Windows updates closely. High time to revamp your development model or fire your marketing team if you cannot support so many variants easily and systematically. Microsoft.... What can I say? 3 years for a problem that if unresolved goes against the efficient computing paradigm. 

    Leaving the 650M in idle mode with the tray exe resolves the stuttering, of course, but power consumption and heat output rise.
