[Partially Fixed] Intel + NVIDIA Laptop Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

  • Update Intel HD 630 driver to 24.20.100.6194+
  • Update NVIDIA Driver to 398.36+

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes. 

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer) ~~>~~Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

    Also I have one more strange thing. When I disable the intel gpu the dGPU is also turning off and the laptop have no more gpus. Does anyone experience the same?

    Anyway it doesn't matter who's blame but the problem had to be solved long time ago. My opinion is that the problem , as I already mentioned, is related to desktop version of dGPU in laptops which are turned off to save some power but it takes a bit more time to wake up or more power and some controllers are trying to prevent battery breaking and the like.

    Does anyone have a intel+Pascal laptop with mobile version of dGPU to test with Optimus view test if the dGPU is triggered?

    After I chatted with MSI (about 1 month) and did some tests that they asked me to, I ended up with sending my laptop to their head service center in Poland for investigation. Will come later with some information about when I get my laptop back.

    I sent them the links to this and Intel threads and told them that there are many people with MSI laptops that have issue so they definitely should know about.

    P.S. I understand that my English is bad, I did my best to explain my thoughts)))

    First if you want to install nvidia driver you have to install intel’s drivers. How i can install i look youtube there are a lot of video how install intel driver and i highly recommend SDI DRIVER tool. and you can’t install last intel driver you should install old like a 6 months old driver im not sure about this. im using windows 8.1 everythings faster than win10.

    Thanks for testing that out. I was also thinking of something more higher in resources when invoking the dGPU. But still weird, as those desktop triggers are not asking for much resources when switch freezing.

    About Windows 8.1:

    My 7700HQ + GTX1060 doesn't work with Windows 8.1 and I don't know how for others work... I can't do updates or install drivers. From what I see Windows 8.1 is incompatible. See below:

    As you can see I could not install the drivers and I have selected Windows 8.1 drivers from Intel and Nvidia when downloading them. Also Windows update doesn't work and you can verify what that code means: Kaby Lake is incompatible with Windows 8.1.
