[Partially Fixed] Intel + NVIDIA Laptop Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel iGPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070. The problem is whenever you perform some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which causes the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Right click on desktop
  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Since the problem was OS based, it could be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Razer.

This is nearly a three-year-old bug:

  • Update Intel HD 630 driver to 24.20.100.6194+
  • Update NVIDIA Driver to 398.36+

Hi everyone,

With the latest KB4284848 the problem is partially solved. The community and I have tested the build and we can confirm that it fixes most of the freezes. 

There are still some problems though. Some freezes left within the Edge browser and File Explorer. Please post your feedback!

Fixed:

  • Sometimes opening Action Centre to see the notifications causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Click on Safely remove hardware and it freezes! Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Opening Explorer triggers dGPU without causing a freeze. Fixed with NVIDIA GeForce Driver 397.93
  • Opening some store apps like Instagram for the first time. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.137.
  • Turning ON Bluetooth first time after reboot freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer) ~~>~~Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Starting slideshow in MS's own PowerPoint. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • First time opening Display Settings via right click triggers dGPU and causes a freeze. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?
  • Start Menu > Shut Down > Triggers dGPU and freezes. Fixed with Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.165?

Not Fixed:

  • Changing resolution > Still causing the lag sometimes.
  • Locking the session (Win + L) triggers dGPU and makes a freeze every time.
  • First time video playback with Edge triggers dGPU and causes a freeze.

    my temporary solution is to open nvidia control panel on the preview page with the spinning logo and then just minimizing that to tray with RBTray (google it)

    Use this: https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3. It's much simpler.

    Staring at that GEFREEZE banner picture (awesome, btw!) than eyes jump to "Did this solve your problem?" No it didn't Microsoft forum, but it sure was funny! hehe!

    So.. as of now I experience the following;

    Having installed the latest intel and nvidia drivers the issue is a lot less present, but it still is.

    Hopefully; since different parties are involved and at least Intel is looking into this it will be solved.

    I think we cannot point our fingers to one party; basicly it's the OEM (msi in my case), nvidia, intel and microsoft who have to coöperate to figure this out.

    the OEM should at least update their driver page more frequently if you ask me.

    msi's official download page provide older versions of drivers and that's not good.

    Then, nvidia needs to specifically debug and fix whatever they can and whatever has to do with switching gpu's in laptops (gtx1060 in my case)

    Then intel needs to do pretty much the same so that switching gpu's goes as smooth as can be; like on configurations that don't have this issue; it kind off seems like an overlap between intel and nvidia here; hopefully they'll figure this out; maybe in co-operation with each other.

    of course; microsoft with Windows; being the most used OS on laptops like this (for pretty good reason) has to check that the basic OS functionalities (specifically the gpu-activation / utilization; in general; hardware management) is done properly so that windows has the right 'backbone' to make this run well.

    tl; dr - the four (yes, 4, not one) involved parties should fix this (asap); it is going in the right direction (the stutters are less present then say, a few months ago) and it is definitely possible to have a solid fix for this.

    I have noticed another issue :

    When I exit a game and try for example to right click or access the start menu , there is lag . After a couple of seconds if I try again the lag is gone.

    So the right click on desktop is not entirely fixed .
