Windows Defender Offline on Windows 7 machines DEFINITIONS OUT OF DATE

Windows Defender Offline has stopped recognizing UPDATED Definitions on W7 machines,  Again.

Immediately after updating the Media USB, using the MSSSTOOL, attempts to boot from the USB fail,

indicating that the Definitions are out of date. On both 32bit and 64bit machines.

This same failure occurred in 2016, on multitudes of W7 machines, between January and July.

Microsoft eventually fixed it by releasing a new version of the MSSSTOOL. 4.9.0221.0  (872kb).

The failure with WDO on W7 machines in 2016 began to occur shortly after problems showed up in

Windows Defender on W10 machines, and was probably the result of fixing the W10 machines.

We may now have the same thing occurring again. After the CREATOR update to W10, it appears they

are having problems with WDO.   And now WDO is broken for W7 machines.

MICROSOFT, if you have modified the configuration of the definitions or the WDO program data in an

effort to repair the problems in W10 machines, please release an updated version of the MSSSTOOL

that will allow W7 machines to accommodate those changes.    Thanks,  Glen

GREAT NEWS !

Windows Defender Offline is working once again on Windows 7 machines.

There has been a change made to the Windows Defender Offline Program.

It no longer updates definitions before running.

In order to take advantage of this FIX, it will be necessary to format your

USB before you run the mssstool. This will ensure that a fresh copy of the

Program is installed on the USB.

Don't know why we were not notified!  I just happened to discover this change,

while examining a WDO problem on Windows 10. There, it is possible track

the operation, using the Event Viewer. I couldn't believe my eyes.

Happy Scanning,  Glen

    Hi Glen,

This usually happens if the distribution database is broken and needs to be re-created, you might also get an error message. Here's an article on how to troubleshoot definition update issues for Windows Defender.

You may also click this link to learn more about Windows Defender Offline for Windows 7.

Let us know what happens after.

    Hi Regile,

    Thank you for responding

I doubt that you will see this reply. They have merged my question into this discussion thread.

Our problem is not with Windows Defender, but with Windows Defender Offline as it applies

to Windows 7. Therefore, we have no problem with Microsoft Updates. WDO for Windows 7

definition updates are obtained by using one of the downloads (MSSSTOOLS) that you defined

with your "LINK". The TOOL is used to create a Media USB, by "fetching" the WDO Program and

the Latest Definitions from Microsoft. The Media USB is made BOOTABLE.

Booting this Media USB loads the WDO program with definitions for Windows 7 machines.

Our problem is that the WDO program we just downloaded fails to function properly. After it

loads, it immediately declares that the Definitions Are OUT OF DATE. It does NOT check the

viability of the definitions that were supplied on the USB. Instead, it attempts to DOWNLOAD

    definitions from Microsoft immediately.

Of course , most Windows 7 machines do not have internet connectivity while booted to the

Media USB. This causes the error 80072ee7. WDO is now dead in the water!

There are exceptions. I have an old DELL 8300 P4 32 bit, that will connect, booted to the USB.

On that machine I can see that it declares the DEFs are Out Of Date as soon as WDO loads, just

like all my other computers. Without any action from me, after about two minutes, it declares

the definitions are UP TO DATE and displays their version # on the update tab of the program.

It downloaded the definitions directly into the loaded WDO program. It does this regardless of

the version # of the definitions on the USB. The program will scan normally after this.

I am fairly certain Windows Defender Offline on Windows 7 uses the same definitions as

Defender and Defender Offline on W10. Perhaps the Offline programs for W10 and W7 are

related as well. Since this problem became apparent after the release of W10 CREATORS

update, is it possible that some change made to WDO for that has made it incompatible with

the Windows 7 application?              I apologize for the length of this dissertation.

    Thanks,  Glen

    Regile,

Let me ask again;   Has support for Windows Defender Offline on W7 machines

                                   been  discontinued?

The Microsoft Lifecycle Policy page only describes W10, W8, and W8.1 for

Windows Defender. For Windows Defender Offline it gives "No Results Found".

Please let us know if there is any hope for a resolution to the problem described

    in this thread.

    Thanks,  Glen

Does anyone know if Microsoft even reads these forums?

Is everyone just wasting their time asking Microsoft for help?

    Great service Microsoft.
