Windows Defender Offline on Windows 7 machines DEFINITIONS OUT OF DATE

Windows Defender Offline has stopped recognizing UPDATED Definitions on W7 machines,  Again.

Immediately after updating the Media USB, using the MSSSTOOL, attempts to boot from the USB fail,

indicating that the Definitions are out of date. On both 32bit and 64bit machines.

This same failure occurred in 2016, on multitudes of W7 machines, between January and July.

Microsoft eventually fixed it by releasing a new version of the MSSSTOOL. 4.9.0221.0  (872kb).

The failure with WDO on W7 machines in 2016 began to occur shortly after problems showed up in

Windows Defender on W10 machines, and was probably the result of fixing the W10 machines.

We may now have the same thing occurring again. After the CREATOR update to W10, it appears they

are having problems with WDO.   And now WDO is broken for W7 machines.

MICROSOFT, if you have modified the configuration of the definitions or the WDO program data in an

effort to repair the problems in W10 machines, please release an updated version of the MSSSTOOL

that will allow W7 machines to accommodate those changes.    Thanks,  Glen

GREAT NEWS !

Windows Defender Offline is working once again on Windows 7 machines.

There has been a change made to the Windows Defender Offline Program.

It no longer updates definitions before running.

In order to take advantage of this FIX, it will be necessary to format your

USB before you run the mssstool. This will ensure that a fresh copy of the

Program is installed on the USB.

Don't know why we were not notified!  I just happened to discover this change,

while examining a WDO problem on Windows 10. There, it is possible track

the operation, using the Event Viewer. I couldn't believe my eyes.

Happy Scanning,  Glen

Glen, I reported this problem to Microsoft and requested they check into this issue and fix it.  I first went to Microsoft chat and as soon as I explained the problem with scanning WDO into our computers that have Windows 7, the chat rep sent me to another Microsoft site to report the problem.  Hope this helps. Don't really know what else to do at this point.

    Hi Lazy;

Glad to finally hear from someone who is having this same problem!  Truth be known, most

Windows 7 users have this problem, they just don't know it yet.

LONG STORY SHORT:   Microsoft has most likely caused our problem while tending to W10 (v1703).

It will be their prerogative, whether they fix it for the Windows 7 application of WDO or not!!

That may depend on how many W7 users like you express their concern.

From what I have observed, it appears that they have modified the WDO Program to no longer

check to see if the current definitions are up to date. Instead, they just initiate the process of

downloading updated definitions. That might work on W10, but NOT on the W7 application.

MOST Windows 7 machines do NOT have internet connectivity when booted to the MEDIA USB.

Since my old DELL 8300 P4 computer will download the definitions as I have described above,

I am able to observe what I have described. The 8300 shows the "Defs Out Of Date" screen, just like

the other four W7 computers that I have access to, but if I do nothing, after about two minutes, it

declares that the defs are up to date. On the Update Tab, the version of the defs is displayed, and it

is the current level. This same procedure occurs whether my MEDIA USB defs are up to date or not.

After this I am able to Scan with WDO normally. Of course, none of this is how it is supposed to work.

NOTE: The definitions are downloaded to the loaded WDO program, not to the USB. (Like W10) !!!

    Regards, Glen

I too am having this problem.  I saved WDO onto a DVD and restarted my PC.  The program came up and when I tried to scan, I got Virus and Spyware Definitions need updating.  When I hit the update button, I got unable to update due to no internet connection.  I CANNOT RUN THE WDO PROGRAM TO SCAN MY COMPUTER.   This needs to be fixed.  I have Window 7 and an HP PC.

Microsoft needs to take care of this problem so that we can run the WDO in our computers.  How can I help?

    Thanks for your prompt response.

I am sorry to see that you have incorporated my latest Question into my original Discussion thread.

I introduced it since the original was becoming too long for most to appreciate and to respond.

The LINK in my last post, to best of my knowledge, is the place to acquire the MSSSTOOL for using

to create a MEDIA USB, which is used to load and run WDO on Windows 7 machines.

Every step in that process functions as it should, except that once WDO is loaded into the machine,

it promptly declares that the definitions are Out Of Date. However, the definitions are NOT out of

date. Examination of the MPAM file on the Media USB confirms this.

As for using the Update Tab in WDO;  In most machines it is NOT functional, WIFI nor ETHERNET.

It gives a Connection error. Apparently, if there is software included in WDO for this purpose, it is

not adequate.   I say MOSTmachines, because my OLD Dell 8300 P4 will connect thru Ethernet.

By jumping through some hoops, I can eventually get it to download what it considers to be Up To

Date definitions. And it will run a scan. But be advised, the definitions that it updated are in the

LOADED program, not the USB. (This may shed some light on what this problem is.) !!!

In any case, this is not as the program was designed, and not as it has been working before "1703"

Please consider separating my last two posts from this thread and re-establishing the new one.

I am sure that most will not bother to browse all the way through this one.

    Thanks,  Glen
