Update finally completed after close to 5 hours.

As of today 12 April 2016 Window 7 SP1 hangs in searching for updates. Unlike other postings in 2015, their is no Orchestrator service in services.msc. Prior to today Windows update was working fine. Why is this happening? Is there any other way to get these updates. I have restarted the OS to no benefit.

2016-04-12T22:49:44+00:00 It is certainly not acceptable or even ethical. Sorry to say, it is reality and there is little to nothing you or I can do about it short of switching to Linux or Apple.
Microsoft has changed. It is not the same company it used to be. I expect to be defending my computer and my clients' for a long time to come.
If you have not experienced this before, count yourself very lucky. This has been going on since last July. Browse through this forum and you will find thousands of questions about this.

2016-04-12T22:47:09+00:00 Thank you Canadian Tech for your thoughts. Update ran this morning in about two minutes time. I have not since turned off computer or made any changes to it The only process using CPU is the Windows Update function.

Their "wants" are irrelevant. They're under obligation to provide timely security updates until 2020. End of story.

2016-04-12T22:38:17+00:00 I agree Mark. Last month was the first time I had to wait as long as 15 to 20 minutes for the update check to complete. I've been using Windows 7 for almost 4 years and never had this long a wait. Hopefully the matter will soon be rectified.
