How do I find network credentials user name and password?

I have recently installed a peer to peer network.  All computers are Windows 7 except one which is Windows 8.1.   The Windows 7 workstations can access the network computer no problem.

On The Windows 8.1 workstation, when I try to access the network computer, I get a request for Network Credentials.  I have never set credentials up and have no idea of the password.  I tried the Windows sign in password which does not work.  This Windows 8.1 computer is set up as a MIcrosoft account, not a local account.  Big mistake there, but I use remote desktop to log in and that was the only way to get remote desktop to work.

Any idea how to find my network credentials?  Do I look on the local computer or the network computer.

The answer to the actual question - how do I find Network Credentials? - which no-one actually answered - is to Hit WIN +R & type Netplwiz +'Enter' Key on the Target Computer

and then you will see the Username that is required.

'Netplwiz.exe' is the hidden Control Panel Feature that is the secret that holds the key to this problem.

The password is the password that you use to login to Windows on that Computer - you can change it in 'Settings (GearWheel above the Power Button) > Accounts > Sign-in Options > Password' - if you can't remember it.

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Let me ask you;

  • Is the password protected sharing on in the computer you are trying to access?

When password protected sharing is on, people locally or on the network must sign into a user account with a password on your to be able to access shared files and folders and Public folders on your PC.

When password protected sharing is off, people on the network will be able to access shared files and printers and Public folders on your PC without having to sign in to your PC, and local user accounts on your computer will not require having a password.

You must be signed in as an administrator to disable password protected sharing in Windows 7.

a. Open Control Panel in the Start Menu.

b. Open Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel.

Note: If Network and Sharing Center is not available, change View by to Large icons at the top right of the Control Panel.

c. Select Change advanced sharing settings in the left column of the Network and Sharing Center.

d. Expand the network you want to disable password protected sharing on by clicking the down arrow on the right of the profile.

Note: It’s usually the profile labeled current profile.

e. Select Turn off password protected sharing and then click Save changes.

    Hey, I also haven't gotten anywhere with suggestions. other than that when I logon as suggested with an email and microsoft password, Edge does pop open and put itself on my task bar. It looks like a browser overlord.  I close it and remove it, and it pops up again every so often.

    I'm not sure what triggers the request for Network Credentials and would really like to understand what Network Credentials are and what purpose they serve. Otherwise I can never detemine when and where I want to enter them and what accepting Edge means. I have Microsoft 365 running on Windows 01. On a new machine.

    I have tried all of these solutions. I have my username name and password. I still cant log into the target PC from my new PC to access a mapped drive. Both PCs are signed in with Microsoft accounts. I have PIN access on both. Any additional thoughts?
