Windows Defender Offline definitions out of date

Windows 7 64 Bit.  I have been using Windows Defender Offline on a USB thumb drive (4 GB, uses less than 1 GB) for years without problem.  Last week updating Windows Defender Offline definitions to an already working USB thumb drive seemed to install correctly.  When I boot to the USB thumb drive the program boots and runs but I get the message the "definitions out of date", and it will not scan the computer.  I tried formatting USB thumb drive and then installing the whole Windows Defender Offline with definitions instead of just updating the definitions to the already working USB thumb drive.  Everything went correctly, the size of the download appeared to be correct.  I booted to the USB thumb drive and still got the message "definitions out of date".  Since the Windows Defender Offline program started offline, and was installed onto a completely formatted USB thumb drive, it must have downloaded and installed correctly but the definitions are still "out of date".  Are the definitions being updated by Microsoft or has the program been discontinued?

Not sure that matters at this point, the messages appear to be pointing to 2 unrelated failure points.

I have an update.

We have identified the problem and are working on a new Windows Defender Offline release.

    Since WDO has not been working properly for several months why not try one of these?

    I've deliberately infected a machine and tested both Kaspersky & Bitdefender.

    Kaspersky doesn't need updating, the ISO contains latest dats. It found 8 threats.

    Bitdefender needed updating. It scanned much quicker but only found 2 threats.

    Kaspersky is the clear winner in my book. still a bit fiddly and slow to scan.

    GREAT NEWS! ! !   I just finished scanning my 64bit Windows 7 machine with WDO.

    Found what may be BETA copy of the MSSSTOOLs at these locations.

    Note: The new Mssstool is 872kb.   The MPAM file created on the media USB is V 1.225.1250.0

    They were described as Windows 10 items, but they work with my Windows 7 just fine.

    I guess I was wrong !    Microsoft must still love us !

    By the old gods and the new, someone finally gave way at Microsoft... Hurrah!

    I've also just completed an offline scan for my 64 bit systems and can confirm that my original issues has been resolved.

    By my reckoning it took 2 months & 3 weeks to fix.

    To all future searchers:

    Move on...

    Whatever the issue was, it has been solved now and this thread doesn't contain any info on the cause.
