Windows 8.1 won't update

My laptop won't update the normal updates.  I have tried running the windows update troubleshooter, it says it fixed a couple of things but it still won't update any updates.  We've also tried upgrading to windows 10, but that doesn't work either.  I've had to turn off the automatic updates, otherwise it says it updating, then says failure to update, undoing changes and takes absolutely ages to boot up.  Any ideas anyone?

    All the remaining updates say they're for 64-bit.

    This is another strange one. It's the correct operating system version, but it's a 32-bit file:

    Windows8.1-KB3138602-v2-x86.msu  (x86 means 32-bit).

    With these 32-bit versions,  you'll just have to right click and hide them in Windows Update for the time being.

    Re: the log file, KB3146723 is halfway installed, but needs a reboot to complete the installation. 

    I'll have to investigate further to see if anything can be done to force the installation of the update which failed.
