Windows 8.1 won't update

My laptop won't update the normal updates.  I have tried running the windows update troubleshooter, it says it fixed a couple of things but it still won't update any updates.  We've also tried upgrading to windows 10, but that doesn't work either.  I've had to turn off the automatic updates, otherwise it says it updating, then says failure to update, undoing changes and takes absolutely ages to boot up.  Any ideas anyone?

    OK, we'll try something else.

    1. Hit Windows key + R to launch the Run command, type: services.msc and click OK.
    2. In the Services console which opens, scroll down to Windows Time and double click it.
    3. Then change Startup type to Automatic.
    4. Click Apply/OK and then close the menus.
    5. Then repeat the steps to see if the error occurs again when you try to synchronize.

    There are two options in the Startup type called Automatic and Automatic (delayed start), but you only want the first one.

    Okay, so I did the above, and tried to install 1 of the updates and it worked.  I then tried a batch of updates and it didn't work, but they no longer appear in the list that needs to be updated.  I tried another 3 on their own and 2 updated  and one didn't.

    It would be worth your while checking with Sophos to ascertain whether your AV does incorporate a firewall or not because it contains a vulnerability which exposes your machine to attack.

    It would appear that Sophos was informed of the vulnerability on February 18 but has failed to address the issue. See: http://www.securitytracker.com/id/1035691

    Yes, can't remember what it said, I think it fixed a couple of things, but I then did the scannow and DISM thing anyway, but I've just run the fixit thing again and it said "service registration is missing or corrupt" not fixed. It didn't say that the first time!
