Battery drain while in sleep mode (Windows 10)

Hello

I have an Asus GL551. It original had Windows 8.1 on it but I upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago. Ever since it has been running Windows 10 the battery will drain completely within 10-12 hours while in sleep mode. When it had Windows 8.1 this was not an issue. There would still be plenty of battery power even after a few days of not being used and in sleep mode.

I suspect that is is coming out of sleep mode periodically and draining the battery. Just the other day I had been watching a YouTube video. When It finished I closed the lid of the laptop putting it to sleep. About two hours later, with the lid closed the laptop started playing the Youtube video all by itself. I had not touched the computer and the lid was still closed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Kevin

    Hello,

I have a problem with my Microsoft Surface Pro 7 running on Windows 10 Home when closing the lid (putting it in sleep mode, not hibernation). The problem seems to mainly appear after having it connected to an HDMI device/beamer. The laptop experiences a significant battery drain during that time when it is in sleep mode - to the extent that it always shuts down completely with 0% battery life left if I don´t charge it before. I have performed multiple sleep study reports, and the problem always seems to be connected to some SoC subsystems and NoHwDrips...whatever that means...but it basically leaves the laptop 100% active during a time where it should "sleep". (see screenshot below)

Initially I thought this issue would have to do with the computer still being connected to WiFi - but I disabled that function already during sleep, so that can´t be the issue anymore. Does anyone have any advice for me on how to solve this issue? It´s super annoying... Thanks in advance,

    Hi SzczepanCzaicki -

I'm Jerico T., one of the Independent Advisor and a fellow Windows 10 user like you. I understand that you're having some issues right now, let us sort things out.

Have you tried to perform a full scan of your antivirus to check if there are any malware infection on your computer's system? If not, please try to do so. After the scan of your antivirus, let's perform clean boot.

    Perform Clean Boot

    • This process will eliminate 3rd party application running in the background of your computer along with services that are not needed to run windows. If there's any conflicting 3rd party application that causes the issue on your computer, this process will stop it.
    1. Open the run box by pressing the Windows Key + R and type msconfig
    2. System Configuration Utility box will open and by default you are on general tab.
    3. On the General tab, click the selective startup and make sure that load system service and load startup items both have checked mark.
    4. Click on services tab
    5. Put a check mark on Hide All Microsoft Services > This is a very important part as if you miss to click on this, computer might not boot properly or permanently and will end up on clean installation.
    6. Once Hide all Microsoft Services have checked mark on it, click on Disable All
    7. Click on the Startup Tab and click open task manager. This will open another window which contains all your startup applications on the administrator account.
    8. Disable all application that you're not using. You can simply just click on them and select disable.
    9. Click OK , Apply and close the configuration utility.
    10. Restart your computer and check if the issue still persist.

Feel free to reach back if you need any further assistance.

Hope this help. Have a good day.

    Thank you.

    Jerico T.

In low power mode, the SoC or System on a Chip stays active in case you want the screen or need to ask a question, like a phone does..

I thought when the lid is closed, it does what you have it set to do and does not turn on the screen.  There have be many folks complaining about a system turning on the screen even when inside a case so watch for that.  Bluetooth devices, such as a mouse or Pen can turn on the screen and make the system active.

Putting the system into Hibernation, stops any more battery drain as long as it stays in hibernation.  You have one of the earliest versions of the system so it may not be as capable as later systems concerning these type of operations..

As far as the report, the top section has a table of all the sessions.  You can go directly to one by clicking on that line.  From there you can expand out the listing to see if you can tell what is draining power.  Your goal would be to limit the drain as much as possible but you won't be able to stop it completely.

There should also be a setting on the Power and Sleep page regarding staying connected during standby periods.  It is supposed to allow the system to send and receive Wi-Fi traffic.  My system never really seemed to work correctly doing such operations.

You should be able to find information online if you search for Modern Standby or Connected Standby and maybe even InstantGo..
