Many users of Windows Live Mail 2012 have received an email under this heading from the Outlook Team advising them of the changes that are taking place at Outlook.com as accounts are migrated to the same platform as that used by Office 365. Apart from advice to switch to using the built-in Mail apps on Windows 8.1 and 10, users are instructed to apply the patch KB3093594 . A few points to note: The change means that migrated accounts can no longer be synchronized using the old DeltaSync protocol. To synchronize these accounts, users can set up the account again to use IMAP . This will enable mail messages and folders to synchronize, but not the calendar and contacts. The patch enables support for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) to be used instead of DeltaSync in Windows Live Mail 2012 on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 (see System requirements on the download page). Mail synchronization errors can often be cleared by removing the account, closing down the program and waiting a few minutes, then re-launching it and adding the account back again. We don't know what is going to happen with Windows Live Mail 2009 on XP and 2011 on Vista. It is clear that users will no longer be able to sign in with a migrated account to synchronize contacts and calendar, and they won't be able to synchronize mail messages and folders using DeltaSync. Whether the programs will continue to work in other respects (e.g. as a POP3, IMAP and NNTP client) remains to be seen. Apart from this question of synchronizing mail, calendars and contacts with a Microsoft Email account, there is no change now or in the foreseeable future for Windows Live Mail 2012. The only change is that an account upgraded to Outlook Mail can no longer use the DeltaSync protocol to synchronize mail, contacts and calendar over HTTP that has been the default in Windows Live Mail since 2006. I use IMAP for one upgraded Microsoft Email account with no problems, and POP3 for some other Microsoft Email accounts just to make it possible to use complex message rules in Windows Live Mail. You won't see a difference on the Server tab of the account's properties dialogue, but you will in any error message. No, but there is some throttling in place, I suspect to ease the server load as hundreds of thousands - or possibly millions - of users suddenly start re-synchronizing all their folders and messages. Check the progress window (a single click on the Checking email status message opens it): if the download has stalled on Downloading message 0 of n , you won't get any further and might as well click Stop . The sync may continue after closing down the program, so right-click on the program icon in the notification area and select Show send/receive progress to monitor activity. Again, if it's stalled, Stop it. You may find that it has a go with another folder next time. Another problem is that sync seems to choke - and stall - on any attachment.

Just fix it Microsoft. Stop releasing half-baked patches. Windows Live Mail should be able to work on Windows 10 with ActiveSync. Not everyone wants to use the "universal" Mail and Calendar apps.

Once again, in a long line of similar failures, the Microsoft Mail team has managed to screw their customers and do NOTHING to address the problem ....

Sorry, I don't understand. Microsoft Email accounts (ones with a mailbox at mail.live.com) are all provisioned for access via HTTP, IMAP and POP3. The choice is yours. The only change is that an account upgraded to Outlook Mail can no longer use the DeltaSync protocol to synchronize mail, contacts and calendar over HTTP that has been the default in Windows Live Mail since 2006. It took many hours to resolve this problem. I suspect I will have a problem in the future when MS upgrades all mail servers with the same software updates. This is a very poor way to do business for a swr provider..

No, but there is some throttling in place, I suspect to ease the server load as hundreds of thousands - or possibly millions - of users suddenly start re-synchronizing all their folders and messages. Check the progress window (a single click on the Checking email status message opens it): if the download has stalled on Downloading message 0 of n, you won't get any further and might as well click Stop. The sync may continue after closing down the program, so right-click on the program icon in the notification area and select Show send/receive progress to monitor activity. Again, if it's stalled, Stop it. You may find that it has a go with another folder next time.

Another problem is that sync seems to choke - and stall - on any attachment.
