Can't type in search bar Windows 10

After I updated to Windows 10 the search box on the taskbar was working.

A few days later I discovered that I couldn't search anything from this box.

If you have fixed this or know how to fix please share your knowledge as I rely on the search box.

Hello guys and search for a solution for this problem and its was the simple of things.

I don´t know why it works but try it and tell if it works for you guys too.

Press Win + R (to open Run )
copy paste and press enter to run this program. "C:\Windows\system32\ctfmon.exe". it brings back the language bar and for me it allowed me to type in windows search, start menu and WINDOWS 10 apps again

I think it is due to missing Language bar or some think like that.

But when you restart it may stopped working again, just create a task to run this program every time you start the windows and your good to go.

Do you receive any error code/message?
Is there are any update pending or failed to install?

If any of these functions like Start Menu, Settings, Search, Cortana, Microsoft Edge, Action Center and other Windows components are not responding, follow these below methods and check if it helps:

Method 1:

Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard, select Command prompt (admin).
Enter the below commands one by one and hit Enter key. PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
It will open the PowerShell window.
Now enter the below command and hit Enter key. Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

If the issue still persist, follow the below method.

Method 2:

Open the Task manager. Here’s a tip: Press CTRL+Shift+ESC.
Click File > Run New Task
Make sure you have a check mark beside “Create this task with administrative privileges”
Type Powershell
Type the following in the Powershell prompt:

$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest

Close the Powershell window
Reboot the computer and check if it helps.

you must type in cmd the next command:

REG ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v ctfmon /t REG_SZ /d CTFMON.EXE

I'm running windows 10 Home version 1903 build 1836.329. When I click on the search icon on the task bar I get a white line with the search icon "Type here to search" and above the white line is an all black rectangle. Typing into the line shows up but does nothing. Here's a screen shot of the corner of the desktop.

I've tried all(i think) of the fixes I've seen in this thread:
- The one involving $Manifest
- Ctfmon
- stopping and starting Cortana in taskmanager
- sfc /scannow
- dism ....cleanup
- running the search trouble shooter
So far nothing has changed, it's as if whatever is supposed to be supporting the search icon isn't there. I have two other windows 10 PC's in the house and the search icon works fine, with a header line, top apps, and recent activities all there before I type in anything.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I forgot to mention, Search has worked fine for me in the past on this PC. I can't be sure, but I think I lost it in the last month. The only updates that went on in that time were KB4511555, KB4512941, KB4512508, and KB4505903, with the first listed being the last one that went on.

A post by FnPHolland said the same problem had been fixed

by removing KB4512941, I tried that and Search now works again.

I hope Microsoft will do something to fix this.

Ok, I looked up KB4512941 on Microsoft support. Buried in the bowels of the write up is the following:

"Microsoft is getting reports that a small number of users may not receive results when using Windows Desktop Search and may see high CPU usage from SearchUI.exe. This issue only occurs on devices that have disabled searching the web using Windows Desktop Search."

And a statement that they hoped to have a solution by mid-September.

So it looks like I turned off the web results some time back. No longer seems to be easy to turn back on. I looked on TENFORUMS.COM and found a little downloadable .reg file Turn_On_Search_web_results.reg, I ran this then allowed windows to look for updates. It put KB4512941 back on.

My Desktop search now works.

I have new updated windows 10, 2019. 10 may version, and search bar don't working, indexing options control panel (32-bit) don't working I cant open it. PLEASE help me!

Sorry. Cant help. I have gone for a clean windows install. Fingrs crossed.

clean install worked only until the windows 1903 update was installed.

Had to uninstall that update to make the system work
