How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

    Did this plus everything else that seemingly has ever been posted to fix this problem. I then turned off Cortana and all other background apps. Everything pretty much settled until once it again occurred. I broke down and called a computer repair service and booked an appointment. From that moment on the problem has never reoccurred. Cancelled the appointment all good. True Story! Your computer is possessed and needs to be threatened with a repair service. Boom.

    I have the exact same issue. I have seen several people in online forums who has done all of the above solutions, only to have it temporary go away then come right back after a reboot. This is a real windows 10 issue, it is NOT a virus and it is not Skype or Chrome.

    It seems that the 100% Disk full is a major fault of Windows 10 and it has many causes that bring the system to this state. This is multifaceted problem caused by different types of software and their combinations. In my case, the problem started when I installed a program sounding like Driver Doctor or something like that - it became 100% Disk full all the time with corresponding tremendous slowdown of the computer. After removing the program, the problem was gone. However, it still shows up when I start the computer and last for approximately 10-15 min, after which the Disk load becomes normal.

    I wonder why Microsoft itself is silent on this problem?
