How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Figure-1

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

So, its definitely Telemetry that is hogging the disk. This much i know for certain, now. But all the suggested methods (here and in other articles) do not disable it, for me.

I cannot get into gpedit.msc so i changed the registry as suggested, i did have to add the "Allow Telemetry" DWORD. I have double, triple, and quadruple checked i did it correctly. I have

    Still nothing.

At the moment i am stuck going into Task Manager every so often and killing the process.

Odd thing is, i opted out of sending telemetry. And yet...

At which point i am forced to agree with another article i read where someone commented that this is akin to some form of malware. Especially when you have already said "NO!" to sending such telemetry.

Yeah, sorry about that rant. But i am so p***ed off with this issue now.

If anyone has any ideas, please, please, please help me (Obi-Wan Kenobi)

    Dan

I deleted Skype of my computer almost as soon after I purchased it.  So most of this doesn't apply to my situation.

Also, there is no "prefetch" checkbox in my Chrome settings.  The entire line that is highlighted here, isn't there.

Has anyone found out another solution to the 100% disc problem?

That Toshiba is a pretty good laptop.  I do not understand why Windows 10 does not run on it correctly either...

There is no single solution to this problem. the 100 % disk usage can be the result of several programs, windows services, or background programs/services etc.

So everyone will have to try and find which one works for them. the solution is disable one or more programs/ services and see if the disk usage drops. it is also possible that the disk usage will rise to 100 % again after a while, because it is caused by other programs. its an annoying thing.

for instance in my case: i disabled the following programs services

    • some backup service of avg antivirus
    • windows block level backup service
    • windows prefetch
    • also via settings " show notifications about windows"
    • ...

    they work but not permanently

So this is a problem that needs to be fixed by microsoft itself to give a permanent result.
