How to fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10

This is caused by a common combination of Skype as well Google Chrome. Similar issue with other programs could also cause 100% disk usage. To fix this do the following:

Google Chrome:

In Google Chrome, go to Settings > Show Advanced Settings ... > Privacy > Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly

and untick it. See Figure-1 below:

Skype:

Make sure you have exited Skype and it is not running in the taskbar (if it is running in the taskbar then quit it).

Open Windows Explorer and open the following folder:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone"

Now right click "Skype.exe" file and then click "Properties" and open the "Security" tab.

Click the "Edit" button and then highlight "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" and place a tick in the "Write" box.

Click "Apply" and then "OK" and then "OK" again. See Figures-2 to Figure-6 below:

This is it, now run Skype and check the Disk Usage in Task Manager and it will no longer show you 100% disk usage anymore:-

I hope this helps people. I spent a long time in finding a solution to this problem.

    A perspective:

    In reading these replies I believe there is more than one problem associated with the 100% disk issue.

    Problem one which is what I have is: 

      A display of 100% disk useage that is a lie. During a disk intensive operation like windows defender analyses the indicated disk activity goes from heavy (60% +/-) with lots of I/O to 100% disk activity with small I/O progressing to 100% activity with no I/O over a period of 1-2 minutes. The system hangs never to respond again. (I have an SSD)

    Problem two (from what I gleen from reading this thread)

    Heavy  disk useage making the computer very slow or non-responsive for some period of time with eventual recovery. I can see an SSD making an improvement in this circumstance.

    What I believe may have happened...please bear with me.

    On windows 7 and previous versions I could tell my computer was I/O bound but it felt like there were software constraints, like the O/S was metering the I/O so as not to overwhelm the spinning hard disk. (I never saw 100% disk useage and seldom 100% CPU but the system was very slow.

    In windows 10 it feels like the the I/O throttling has been reduced or eliminated I now saw 100% CPU and heavy disk useage but the computer felt much faster.

    Conclusion...It could be a good thing that you see 100% disk useage it means that the system is using the disk (slowest resource) as necessary. Sure an SSD will improve this situation. Of course this scenario assumes no bugs in software causing the problems.

    I believe that trying to clarify the problems is important so far that has not happened in my opinion.

    I began to suspect this- what is needed is an SSD.  But I am presently too poor to buy one now.

    On my two desktops, my present WD one-terabyte drives have 64 MB cache. Isn't this good enough? Gads!

    If this is really the case, couldn't MS in their wisdom, transfer this superfetch/whatever I/O **** to a readyboost and suggest thatusers - even us old desktop geezers - buy a 32 GB or even a 64 GB USB3 thumbdrive? 

    Ever since October, the latest builds have slowed down my desktops AND laptop terribly!

    Until then - and from Build 9976 in January, Win-10 ran great!

    I am beginning to suspect that before October, Win-10 was just a disguised Windows-8 !

    BTW, these problems started happening just before I blew a WD Terabyte drive (the disk with the C-partition on it naturally) - there were suddenly I/O errors all over the disk, including on an EXT4 Linux partition.  I managed to save most of my data, but had to re-install Win-10 Build 10565 on a completely new WD drive.  The 100% disk problem continues on that PC, even after a new install from a fresh ISO DVD.

    Is it possible that Win-10 caused my hard disk to thrash itself to death?

    And if it WERE an SSD, how many read/writes can SSD memory take before it starts to degrade?

    Something very bad around here...!

    This makes sense.  Windows 10 has been designed with SSD hard disks in mind.  If you want to use Windows 10 make sure you do not buy a clearance Laptop this Christmas with Windows 8.1 one it thinking that all you need to do is upgrade it to Windows 10.  Spend a bit more for a good laptop with Windows 10 on it, preferably with a SSD.

    I agree with the assumption that Windows 10, most times, may work seamlessly with a conventional (SATA) hard disk. Moreover, I have successfully upgraded two PC systems composed with old-versioned processors, memory modules and hard disk in opposite with a newer-versioned PC which emerged the disk usage problem. In last case I had to place a SSD in order to fix it.

    I really believe that the disk usage problem probably has to do with a conflict between some devices of the hardware (maybe some particular versions of SATA hard disks) and the specific features of the OS (Windows 8 and10). 

    In conclusion, I suggest that if somebody can't fix the disk usage problem with other measures, he/she finally  needs to intall a SSD. This step will permanently solve the problem without doubt.

    Some of the earlier posts are stating that they are having the problem also with a SSD hard drive. 

    Theoretically, I would have thought that a SSD would solve the problem.  I do not have a SSD hard drive, and I do not have this problem, after 2 minutes my hard drive goes down to 5% or below.
