I think I have had to say this before: You, Mr. Cornell, have obviously not read (or if you have read, have not absorbed) the entire thread, much less the related information found on Woody Leonhard's site.  If you had, you would know about people who have had their settings changed, people who have been tricked, people who have been presented with screens that appear to leave them no choice but to accept Windows 10.  You either don't know what you're talking about, or you don't want to know.

Exactly my point. But as you said "probably will not help those who.. allowed or partially allowed Win 10 Malware to install". 

Therein lies the rub. The meat of the the "sh*t" sandwich we've just been served. 

 For most people, myself included and what I think MSFT is betting on: By the time you know there is a problem it's too late. Because the typical user has been brainwashed to run updates automatically. When this all first started happening and after being stupid enough to let some MSFT idiot support person to remote log on to one of my computers to check some broken .net configuration, i specifically told them NO LESS than 5 times DO NOT INSTALL ANY WINDOWS UPDATE and even opened a txt file, put it full screen and wrote the above in 20 pt font. Watching them like a hawk waiting for my food delivery to arrive, i made the mistake to walk away from my machine for exatly 1 min and 30 seconds to receive mentioned delivery, only to come back and find.....any guesses? The imbicile was installing updates when i got back. Any guesses which update installed first and before i could rip the plug out of the wall? Yep, this abomination. Now if that isn't Malware I'm your Nigerian Prince. And man, are you in luck..you see, you had this extraordinarily wealthy cousin in Lagos......

I am the originator of this discussion on April 12.  It clearly has been an active discussion with 308 and counting contributions to date.

I am a long term IT pro who looks after 150 client almost all Win7 computers.  I have been doing this for my clients for 14 years now, following a long professional career.

I have a procedure I follow and encourage my clients to follow.  It can be found at:

I can tell you with absolute confidence it works.  Not a single one of my clients wants Win10 or has been threatened by it after following this procedure precisely.

Unfortunately, this procedure probably will not help those that have already allowed the Win10 malware to be either partly or completely installed.  Once that happens, the only way back to Win7 is a complete re-install.

Microsoft has turned a decades-long respected process — Windows Update — into a malware distribution system.  It is for all intents and purposes forcing innocent and content Windows 7 computer users into “upgrading” to its new Windows 10 version.  It promises to allow return to Windows 7 within 30 days.  That return process is flawed and leaves your computer virtually unusable and requires re-installation of Windows 7.  For some owners without a re-usable Microsoft product key or a factory restore partition on their computers, it results in a useless thing that used to be a computer.

Windows 10 is a completely new and very different Windows.  Nothing like anything you have used before.

1. It is primarily an advertising/sales vehicle.  That's the keen motivation and reason it is free.
2. By adopting Windows 10, you sacrifice any privacy — essentially, anything on your computer is Microsoft’s and its partner’s to use as they see fit.
3. Windows Update becomes non-optional.  You, as owner of your system no longer have control over what happens to your computer.  Microsoft will re-make Windows (on your computer) into what serves its purposes without asking your permission or opinion.
4. Windows 10 as a system is still full of un-fulfilled promises and bugs.  Many of your programs will not run on Windows 10.  In fact, the “upgrade” process removes some.

So, if you like Windows 7, and most do very much so, I advise you to reject Windows 10 for the foreseeable future.  Be advised that Microsoft has committed to support Windows 7 until at least January, 2020.  Most of your current computers will last that long.

You must adopt a protective stance to prevent your Windows 7 system from becoming something you do not want.

I have advised my clients to change the Windows Update Setting to Never check for updates.  Once a month, about a week after the 2nd Tuesday, they will get an email from me advising to manually start WU and then to reject (right-click, hide) specific updates KB3035583, KB2952664, KB2977759, KB3021917, KB3075249, KB3080149, KB3083710, KB3083324,  KB3022345, KB3090045 and  KB3068708.  This list may change over time.  In fact, the December, 2015 update brought a new one: KB3112343

Some may scoff at this idea.  Well they are incorrect.  Never means you are never giving Microsoft a chance to decide what you download and install.  It does NOT mean you will never update.  The difference is that now you take control and the responsibility of updating of Windows and Office.

Some may believe that Microsoft would not do such a stupid thing. 

You must read Woody Leonhard (one of the most respected writers in the trade)  http://www.infoworld.com/article/2983777/microsoft-windows/how-to-clean-the-windows-10-crapware-off-your-windows-7-or-81-pc.html?nsdr=true Woody calls the Windows 10 download “crapware.”  Woody’s advice is that if you have Windows 7, keep it, you are better off by far.

If you see the Windows flag on the bottom right of your screen, chances are pretty high, your computer already has the Win10 file. Even if you do not, it may be on your computer shortly anyway.  Here are instructions on how to rid yourself of it:

It will allow you to prevent any future operating system upgrades and delete downloaded Win10 files, but it will not remove any of Microsoft’s installed or attempts to install spyware.

This process works, but it only works if you do all the steps and do them in order.

1. Take Windows Update off automatic — Never check for updates
2. Windows Update, Installed updates, WAIT a long time till you see the green bar complete its long trip to the right
3. Now, search for each of the listed updates, uninstall them.  You must wait until the list is re-created each time.
4. If there are others you want to uninstall, click Later
5. Then, clear the search box and after the list is again displayed, enter another KB number.
6. Restart the PC

If you choose “check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them”, Microsoft will download an “important” updates like KB3035583 to your computer.  It will be pre-checked — selected.  Unless you check Windows Update (WU) and discover this BEFORE you shut down, it will install it during the shut-down process.   Hiding accomplishes nothing.

This is more than annoying.  It goes way beyond that.  It is underhanded, dishonest and just plain wrong for Microsoft to do this.  There is no offer to accept or refuse.  There is no informed consent.  There is not even an idea of what it is your getting and what the result is if you change your mind.

That is not true as demonstrated on a Windows 7 and a Windows 8.1 computer here. You are not creating the right settings.

Ok,,I feel as if I have to go on a little mini rant (OK I'm sorry it's a long rant). This is not directed to any individual as I too thought I knew "how this stuff worked in every previous iteration of Windows as we've always known it", but  In response to Gerry's comment here, although I do understand what you think you may know and that in the past may have been true but I must assert that whatever past experience you have had, whatever you thought were "the rules", whatever you thought were the lines that were not ever crossed, you are going to have to come to a brutal reality that like it or not, someone, somewhere in Redmond threw all of that out. There are no more rules it appears, at least ones that were in the past on the user's side of the equation. It is pretty telling that this thread has a suspicious absence of response from anyone claiming (at least officially) to make any statements from Microsoft save for poor Vinod Raj P Microsoft Support Engineer

way back in the 2nd response to this thread in April 2015.  At least officially the silence from Microsoft Official is pretty deafening. I'm pretty sure now that most Microsoft employees have some specific orders from higher ups on what they can and cannot say regarding what is really going on right now.

Backtracking about year and half ago. 

I too was working on those "old rules". I was not an IT professional, I never looked to see what all those Windows Updates with their cryptic KB#'s and sanitized descriptions actually were doing. I just inherently trusted Microsoft that if I was getting an update marked important, or "security" then there must be good reason for it. The sometime mid 2014 I kept having problem after problem, things that previously worked were just not working anymore. Many of the updates I was trying to blindly apply were wreaking havoc and destruction on my poor machines and until I started having to do some in depth research to fix all the myriad of technical issues I was facing, I had no idea how deep the "rabbit hole" really was. 

Now I found this link helpful the other day in outlining just some of the many, many reasons and issues that keep many of us from moving to Windows 10.

I will state with 100% certainty that indeed this update in particular and all of these Windows 10 updates in general will do just that. May not be the entire file all at one time, but eventually and without asking you at any time for permission there will be a hidden  "$Windows~BT" folder

And my last comment on this for now, we are still the tiny minority of people with even the interest to become  aware that this stuff is taking place and/or care when we are informed. Of, course there's the Universal Windows Platform but if you're not into Metro apps it means nothing to you. <br>Windows 10 is faster <br>According to this, this and this there's<br> no discernible difference between Windows 7, 8 and 10. Windows 10 features an improved memory handling for certain multithreaded applications like WinRAR but most other applications have the same performance. <br>"I have installed Windows 10 and it feels faster", right, like with every Windows release it feels fast when you install it from scratch. Then, strangely, it slows down significantly. <br>In conclusionJust before you call me anti-Microsoft, a Linux shill, zealot or fanatic, here's a wonderful<br> list of Linux problems that I've been compiling over the past six years. The truth is I don't plead allegiance to any OS on the market. So, sorry, Windows 10 sucks no less than Linux sucks, it just sucks differently. So far, Microsoft has two great modern<br> OSes: Windows XP and Windows 7 (in the past they had rock solid Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000). <br>I have no attitude towards MacOS X, because I've never had a chance to use it, however from what I've seen on screeshots this OS has the worst fonts antialiasing among any existing OSes - I actually refuse to try it because I don't want to hurt my eyes. <br>I'm not a journalist and I've never been one. <br>P.S.
