Microphone auto muting and the levels go down to zero

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community Forums. You have reached the right place. Let us work together to find the root cause of this issue and try resolving it.

This issue may cause due to improper sound settings or incompatible audio drivers.

Follow the steps as below and check if that resolves the issue.

1. Right click on the volume symbol, on the right bottom corner.
2. Click on play back devices.
3. Go to communication and check do nothing.

You can also check with following steps:

**Method 1:**Testing for an audio signal

1. Click Start, and then Control Panel.
2. Click Hardware and Sounds, and then click Managing audio devices...
3. Click the Recording tab.
4. To test the microphone, speak into it. To test line-in, send a signal to the line-in port from the source audio device (press play from the audio player). Look at the gray bars next to the device name on the recording tab:
5. If the gray bars next to the device name change to green, this device is active and an audio signal is being passed through the microphone or line-in port. This step shows that problem is related to sound settings in the software that uses the microphone. If you have not already done so, set the selected device to default and adjust the levels. Once the device is set to default and the levels are set, use and adjust the sound recording or voice carrying software.
6. If the gray bars remain gray and inactive, the device is not recognizing a signal. Leave the recording tab open and go to the next step.

**Method 2:**Check volume levels and mute.

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Hardware and Sound.
3. Click Sound.
4. Select Speakers, and then click Properties.
5. Click the Levels tab.
6. Click the Muted button next to Microphone and any other line-in that is muted.
7. Use the slider bar to raise the level for Microphone and each line-in to at least 75.
8. Click OK.

Mine has been doing exactly the same thing recently. It was fine one minute and out of nowhere it started muting itself. When I go into "Manage Audio Devices" and check the levels I see it muted. I change it, set it back to 80 and without warning it mutes itself again. I've tried everything from rebooting, going back to a previous date, running various anti-virus and anti-malware scans. Nothing seems to work! 

This is costing me income because I run online, voice conferences!! 

I don't know what else to do! My pc isn't that old.

It is still randomly muting and going to zero. I have changed cords and USB slots as well as uninstall/reinstall drivers for audio and mic. Nothing has changed and it still keeps randomly mutin and level goes to zero. I have a Blue Yeti mic.

I am sorry Vijay B; and I don't mean this to be disrespectful, but you almost always give us steps that are totally worthless.

The "automuting of the mic". is NOT due to your "assumed" causes.

It has NOTHING to do with microphones, internal or external. It does not matter whether (on a laptop)  the external mic is plugged in or not. It does NOT matter how you program it in "sound", or your sound software.. It is NOT caused by drivers afore or aft, etc, It still happens each time, after you enable the mic, in just moments.

It is NOT programming either, period!

It probably is a glitch in a Microsoft update, as usual. Jesus only knows which one. You apparently have NOT seen it or a clue what to do about it.

I wish you would stop treating us as novices; who do not even know how to turn on our PC's. For you always resort to wasteful steps; that have NO bearing on our problems. I have seen you do this many times. I have NO recall of your remedies ever solving a single problem; although you may have. I sincerely hope you have, but I have NEVER seen it. All you do is give a list of steps that MOST have already done before they go to MS. Oh indeed yes!

This "automuting of the mic" IS a relatively new MS problem., that THEY have caused.  Oh indeed YES! Many of us have experienced this travesty just all of a sudden. Bam it is there!. Google it and you will see how many foolish "cures" many have for it. They do not work! It is MS problem for sure. They alone can fix it I am sure.

So unless you KNOW for sure how to fix it, please don't comment on it. For you do more harm than good  when you give "off the top of one's head" worthless fixes!

The author of this thread, NAILED the problem. MANY Of us are having this problem all of a sudden. One of these days, someone in MS, will FIND out how to cure it. For that always happens sooner or later. By that time NO body is listening to your worthless cures.

I chuckle every time I see the ridiculous number of those who say you have "solved my problems". Would not surprise me one iota if those are fake numbers, where you somehow managed to juggle the totals. Oh indeed yes. It has been done many times in the wicked "corporate" world. Oh yes it has!

Again, IF you do not know for sure and certain, what the cure is, please simply stay out of trying to "dazzle us with footwork". It truly becomes silly after a while. Oh indeed yes!
