Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run.

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

My understanding from previous answers is that this should not be running on Windows 10.

However, I have checked today in Task manager, and it was running at up to 13% of CPU on my Window 10 Home Premium 64-bit.

I appreciate any answers and/or comments.

your meaning is wrong;

it always run on win10 by default and maybe after winupdates;

it's new ms feature to collect your OS stats;

to disable it in proper way see my prev. post:

diabled it without remove file as described there;

maybe after updates need reenable;

(I had diable updates autoinstall and my PC work fine without recreating that stupid process;)

Again, *NO* it's not a new feature... It really was part of the Windows 10 upgrade. However, MS never stopped using it to spy on us... Again, also, though disabling it the way you say it helps a bit some people, *NO* it does not work all the time. In my case, on the three PCs I tried it, it only worked for a day and then CompatTelRunner resumed scanning, even with all relevant tasks turned off... Deleting it will help but not that much as it's only a front for the scanning. Once CompatTelRunner is deleted, the very same scanning continue, excepting it's being conducted either by scvhost.exe(localnetworknoimpersonation) or scvhost.exe(localnetwork). That's why a disk with very high accoustics helps as you can terminate the process tree as soon as you hear the disk spinning like crazy when you know no legit disk consuming program is running. It's important here to point out that the CPU consumption (a full core gets dedicated to it) is nowhere near the disk usage (reading) CompatTelRunner and child processes cause with elevated priority...

As for O&O I'm always reluctant on installing third party software, and most people I know are too.
