Anyone know what CompatTelRunner.exe is/does?

Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

That is the compatibility update for win 7 RTM.  Care to tell us more about the problem?

    Here's a new development, with today's update, the spyware role seems to have been reassigned...  Now, CompatTelRunner.exe no longer seems to run, but sdiaghost.exe seems to be doing all the useless scanning and CPU consumption (read: spying)...

    See my post on Dec. 19th.  I believe with newer versions of Windows 10, there may be more registry entries that need this,

    For all versions of Windows start by removing it from Task Scheduler:

    1. Start Task Scheduler
    2. Go to: Task Scheduler Library / Microsoft / Windows / Application Experience
    3. Disable all three tasks in that folder
    4. Go to: ask Scheduler Library / Microsoft / Windows / Customer Experience Improvement Program
    5. Disable all three tasks in that folder

    Then for Windows 10 you'll also need to cripple the app from the registry:

    1. Start Registry Editor (regedit.exe) as Administrator
    2. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\TelemetryController
    3. Rename (oir Delete) the entry from TelemetryController to TelemetryControllerX
    4. Reboot

    Unfortunately, you'll need to do the latter step again in the future.  I found something had put it back in the registry just now.

    In my case it only stopped it for the active session... Next session, it was springing back into action even if all tasks were off...

    I have all the tasks in task scheduler disabled already but I am going to try to delete the registry key. Insane the way they force things on us that we do not want nor use.

    I did not opt into the customer experience program during install, went out of my way to disable tasks for it services and so on - but webcache files still shows they are collecting "extra data"
