Anyone know what CompatTelRunner.exe is/does?

Think that is bad....

The last Forced Update removed without notice CCleaner. Didn't even notify it did so.

I re-installed it with the newest version without a problem as the version I had been running was dated.

Gotta say I was some angry over this and Microsoft Support got a blast. I had hoped a log was created that shows whenever a program is removed at the VERY LEAST. No such log according to them.

Now I have to check all 8 computers to see if I can figure out if any of them have 'lost' important software Windows Updates have removed in the past few months of updates.

As of today, all my computers Windows Update Service are turned off.  I will only run it manually from here on so I can at least monitor what it does, as it does it. I also did a printout of each computers software list.

Bloody ridiculous that I have to jump hoops to avoid the 'control' they have of my computers.

Cannot believe I am considering replacing my main laptop and at least a couple of towers with Macs but my trust in Microsoft has bottomed out for so many reasons.

Several of my clients have already switched to Macs. This has to be the biggest boost to Apple in a long time and it cost them nothing.  Apple Execs must be laughing all the way to the bank.

I tried it. It worked for a few days, but compattelrunner.exe resumed showing up in "Resources Monitor" consuming between 15MB/sec to 30 MB/sec for as long as it took me to "End Process Tree". Otherwise, it kept running for well over half a hour. I don't know what triggers those scans, but they *seem* to be every Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, at 10pm eastern time, plus some other times I cannot explain the schedule. I went back to the task scheduler and regedit, and all entries are as you say.

In the windows folder (I dont remember exactly which) I made the "Adminitrators" "take ownership" of compattelrunner.exe, to then adjust permissions so "Administrators" have "Full Control" over it, so now I could delete it as an Administrator, but, now, it's either "scvhost.exe" or "System" that perform that 15MB/sec to 30 MB/sec scan indefinitely. Though I can kill scvhost.exe process like I used to when it was done by compattelrunner.exe, I can't when System is doing it, so I need hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, otherwise, shutting down takes forever. It only temporarily helps, as the same craziness resumes next scheduled time.

I also noticed something more... Ever since that compattelrunner issue started couple months ago, all my x86 (a.k.a 32bit) app now runs significantly slower, both in terms of disk reading/writing speed and overall performance. It is most noticeable with games that are 15+ years old (read: The Sims 3, and other "legacy" games). And they are only slowed down when those scans are *not* taking place. During the scans, all x86 apps just freeze solid, and become "non responsive".

I also noticed the compattelrunner issue on new high end computers, however, SSD with gigantic reading/writing speed can work like nothing is happening, though this process is consuming up to 50MB/sec, but I wonder about the life expectancy of a SSD with such a process on a loop for multiple hours a day, several times a week...

Bottom line, I have two questions: 1 - Is there any other solutions I overlooked? 2 - What purpose can MS possibly achieve with such redundant perpetual scans that are kept local and *not* sent over? Are they just trying to reduce PCs overall performances for an obscure reason??

(I signed on the Insider program, but the same issues show up on PCs linked to my account, and my aging father computers, my work computer, and my friend's, and none of those are linked to the Insider program)

Unfortunately this is part of Windows 10 too.  So if you think upgrading will get rid of it, it doesn't.  From what I had seen, it's even worse. 

As for it being a left over, I did a clean install of Windows 10, not an upgrade and it's there too.
