I had recently disabled windows defender on windows 10 and when I did I know want to enable it again but when I open action center and press Turn On Now it does nothing. I have pressed it multiple times and with no result. Fix: press Windows Key + R type regedit locate the following path * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS DEFENDER* Right Click this file and select permissions press Advanced where it says owner press change change the owner to your username Now press apply then ok select Full Control from the permissions menu (click the Widnows Defender folder ) Find the value DisableAntiSpyware and DisableAntiVirus and set these values to 0 (explaination: double click each and where the 1 is put 0 and press ok) Open services.msc find Windows Defender there should be 2 services: Windows Defender Service and Windows Defnder Netwrok right click each and press start after you have started both restart your computer Run Windows Defend er I Hope this Helps! I used this procedure--or tried to. Most of it did not work. When I finished (I'm not going to explain, I am only going to report it) I had the following results: The "owner" appears to have been changed from "SYSTEM" to "******@cox.net The "signing" on something was wrecked. Windows Defender behavior is unchanged except I now get a 577 error. The entry on the mouse-in-the-lower-left-corner-right-click menu that used to say "File Explorer" now says "3 - Windows Explorer" (seems to still work). I came to grips with the fact that I am an idiot because I did not do a recovery point or a regedit "export" before I started.

"Windows Explorer line says "3 - Windows Explorer" " Should that not be "File Explorer"?!

I don't and I didn't get a registry snapshot. Now what? (May be related but I don't see how when I right click on the window in the left corner, the Windows Explorer line says "3 - Windows Explorer" --what's up with that?)

I got the owner changed to ******@cox.net (and can't change it back). Nothing else worked as outlined. (#8 there was not "apply") #10 I could not see the values until I clicked "edit" and it won;t let me change them. I can't find services.msc. Got to the services via "control panel"--it lets me start "network" but "services starts to start then stops. Please advise.

Fix:

press Windows Key + R
type regedit

select Full Controlfrom the permissions menu
