KB3023607 repeatedly removed by deepclean after KB3032359/KB3021952 (5.2mb ea) repeatedly offered/installed...

KB3021952 (Feb "Cumulative" Update for IE) invloves a "bundled" update, it includes KB3023607. KB3032359 (March "Cumulative" Update for IE) is "bundled" it includes KB3040335 & KB3023607 (Again???) KB3032359 (allegedly) supersedes KB3021952 but both are needed along with KB3023607 to have a fully patched system. The problem occurs when Windows Update Cleanup (deepclean) is run after all patches are installed, it removes KB3023607, the "bundled" update as superseded :

The KB's 3021952 & 3032359 (5.2mb) that are continually removed/re-offered/re-installed/re-removed... lather, rinse, repeat... are actually the child package component KB3023607 which gets removed by deepclean.

At this point, it's evident that MS needs to investigate why Windows Update cleanup detection logic is ...broken (for lack of a better word) on some user's computer's only, there has to be a "missing link" ... I'm out of ideas and don't see too many here or elsewhere on the Innernetz

I have 2 options to correct the problem of KB3031432 not appearing in Installed Updates but yet the MSU installer returns the message KB3031432 is already installed... and the PendingDeletes that won't.

  1. Repair Install
  2. Restore from prior backup image (2/12/15, after Feb Black Patch Tuesday, tested on spare HDD.

Thank to everyone who replied, and a special thanks to "J"... seems you're one of the few I've seen around here that "gets" it.

Edit to add: I have successfully restored my system to a previous backup image (2/12/15) prior to the "March Patch Madness" described in my OP, uninstalled the troublesome KB2852386 that enables Update Cleanup and re-applied the March '15 patches, all now appear in Installed Updates, including KB's 3023607, 3035131 & 3031432. Kindly mark this as "Answer" as I consider this matter resolved... if only temporarily.

    I am the topic starter and here are the logs (7z) requested, I've managed to recreate the conditions of 3/11 described in my OP... deepclean removed KB3023607 & is reoffered as KB's 3021952 & 3032359 @ 5.2 mb each. Also note that deepclean removes KB's 3031432 & 3035131 which then do not show up in Installed Updates nor are they asked by WU & when attempting to install manually they are reported as "already installed".

    For those of you experiencing issues, I'd like to get a couple of logs from the systems impacted so we can take a look.  We've tried to reproduce the issues with KB3004375 and 3031432 internally and cant get this to reproduce so I'm looking for your help here.  Here's what I need:

    • %windir%\logs\CBS (folder would be best)
    • %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

    Please put them on a share (OneDrive, DropBox, etc) and I'll pull them down.  Thanks!

    well... a few final words about z M$ Black Tuesday of April 2015 and my personal conclusion concerning this M$ mess:

    1. KB3021952 as z early bird of this year M$ WU issues was uninstalled completely and then put to a hidden list in its full size of 55MB.

    there are no more limitations of using deepclean at z moment.

    1. z issue of re-offer of KB890830 aka update for MRT.exe was just a glitch occurred solely on my main laptop and was easily resolved by download of Windows-KB890830-x64-V5.23.exe and its manual install.
    2. now there are 4 KBs total in my hidden list - KB3021952 and 3 others concerned to win7 upgrade.

    that's it.

    p.s. wow I just love when M$ MVPs crack jokes instead of doing something helpful to resolve this WU problems... so here is another old joke especially for M$ & MVPs:

     A Pretty Aged Woman as Patient (demonstrating): "Doctor, here is my problem - my breast came to be flabby and drooped"

       Doctor: "Well, I see. May I ask you to bend down and touch your toes, but without bending your knees?"

       Woman: "Ok, what now?"

    oops... this KB2990214 marked by WU as Important is finally recognized as an update of Windows Update Agent files from v7.6.7600.320 to v7.6.7601.18804 and now seems safe enough to be applied...
