KB3023607 repeatedly removed by deepclean after KB3032359/KB3021952 (5.2mb ea) repeatedly offered/installed...

KB3021952 (Feb "Cumulative" Update for IE) invloves a "bundled" update, it includes KB3023607. KB3032359 (March "Cumulative" Update for IE) is "bundled" it includes KB3040335 & KB3023607 (Again???) KB3032359 (allegedly) supersedes KB3021952 but both are needed along with KB3023607 to have a fully patched system. The problem occurs when Windows Update Cleanup (deepclean) is run after all patches are installed, it removes KB3023607, the "bundled" update as superseded :

2015-03-12 09:31:31, Info CBS DC: Package_for_KB3023607~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0: unique components: 58 Size: 20.54 MB (21,538,670 bytes) 2015-03-12 09:31:31, Info CBS Total size of superseded packages: 20.54 MB (21,538,670 bytes)

The KB's 3021952 & 3032359 (5.2mb) that are continually removed/re-offered/re-installed/re-removed... lather, rinse, repeat... are actually the child package component KB3023607 which gets removed by deepclean.

At this point, it's evident that MS needs to investigate why Windows Update cleanup detection logic is ...broken (for lack of a better word) on some user's computer's only, there has to be a "missing link" ... I'm out of ideas and don't see too many here or elsewhere on the Innernetz

.

I have 2 options to correct the problem of KB3031432 not appearing in Installed Updates but yet the MSU installer returns the message KB3031432 is already installed... and the PendingDeletes that won't.

  1. Repair Install
  2. Restore from prior backup image (2/12/15, after Feb Black Patch Tuesday, tested on spare HDD.

Thank to everyone who replied, and a special thanks to "J"... seems you're one of the few I've seen around here that "gets" it.

Regards & Hasta la Bye-Bye

,

"Pink"

Edit to add: I have successfully restored my system to a previous backup image (2/12/15) prior to the "March Patch Madness" described in my OP, uninstalled the troublesome KB2852386 that enables Update Cleanup and re-applied the March '15 patches, all now appear in Installed Updates, including KB's 3023607, 3035131 & 3031432. Kindly mark this as "Answer" as I consider this matter resolved... if only temporarily.

Thank you.

After subsequent checking WU reoffered ONLY KB's 3021952 & 3032359 @ 5.2mb each which is actually KB3023607 (child package, fixes TLS vuln) of KB3021952 (Feb '15 IE Cumulative Update) & was also included as a child package of KB3032359 (March '15 IE Cumulative Update). KB's 3031432 & 5131 were not listed in Installed Updates and were not reoffered; attempting to install them via standalone .msu resulted in dialogue pop-up "... KB303XXXX is already installed on your computer:

Uninstalling KB3033929 after reboot WU offers 7 updates <<<screenshot @Photobucket

Selecting only KB's 3035131 & 3033929 (the other 5 are actually superseded by these 2) satisfies WU, both 3035131 & 3033929 are both shown in Installed Updates & WU up to date, 1 problem solved Note: one could also opt to manually install KB3035131 first then KB3033929 as per KB for the same result; I tested in VM on my other thread (pg 4 March 20 @6:01 PM)

KB3031432 however is a another matter...

As stated above KB3031432 was installed Feb '15 Patch Tue, along with KB3004375 as per KB- everything was OK. Both show in Installed Updates, WU satisfied & up-to-date..

until March '15 Black Tue when Deepclean... did it's thing for lack of a better term. Uninstalling KB3004375 & subsequent WU check shows 2 updates (these 2 KB#'s) @11.5mb ea, screenshot:

Installing them thru WU show both as "Successful" in History, but KB3031432 STILL does not show in installed Updates; running the standalone .msu results in...wait for it... KB3031432 isalready installed

Running (but not executing) Deepclean in Disk Cleanup falsely flags the same 2 KB's as superseded:

I have tested this thing using different scenarios, different Install Media - Dell OEM re-installation & DigitalRiver ISO (hash matches w/MSDN) on my "Live" system & VM and always get the same result.

I hope someone can use this info to pass along to M$ troubleshooters (don't know their official titles) to try and cipher what the problem is.

    HTH & Regards,

You may well be tired of devoting time to troubleshooting this problem, but if you don't mind, I'd like to ask a question whose answer I consider may shed some light.  Do you have any "0x800705aa - ERROR_NO_SYSTEM_RESOURCES" entries in the CBS log?

Actually I find it stimulating. The long and short of it is I'm retired on disability (heart problems) but my full time job is primary care giver to my just turned 89 yr old mom... teaching myself about different phases of computing including troubleshooting is actually therapeutic for me.

No errors of any kind in CBS log; entries in log are limited to 3/29/15 only, I haven't executed WU Cleanup but regularly run CCleaner. I do have some odd entries in PendingDeletes that... won't.

See my topic @ SevenForums **here**.

EDIT TO ADD: By "errors of any kind in CBS log" are you referring to /Logs/CBS/ deepclean.log if so, yes, on first run of WUC fresh VM install I get about 40-50 lines of

    2015-03-30 02:09:40, Info                  CBS    Failed getting top level deployments [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]

    Regards

    Pink

PS: I remember Pa from as far back as the Aumha.net forums and truth be told I never was much of a fan, I guess our "styles" just clash from the get-go.
