I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

    Susan

I must be stupid or blind but I don't see a long blue bar anywhere on the page and the only thing that looks like a search box is, in fact, a search box.

Anyway, I decided to contact Microsoft Support and after a techie spent around an hour re-doing the DSIMs etc.  she took a copy of some logs and someone is supposed to call me tomorrow night.

I'm not holding my breath but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Update:  Tier 3 Support called around 15:30 this afternoon and, after telling me he would restore my faith in Microsoft, he proceeded to carry out all the SFCs, DISMs etc that the Tier 1 support had tried yesterday and that I had been using over the last 5 days.  No success - so he then used the latest version of the update and that failed.  Then he took copies of the logs and disappeared for around 30 minutes and another technician joined the remote access session.  He fiddled about a bit and eventually the technician who called at 15:30 called me again and said he was giving up for now.  He said he'd analyise the logs and call me back on Thursday!  His final action and good night was at 22:00 so a total of 6.5 hours was spent trying to get 2919355 installed.  Would it not have been cheaper for MS to just give me a working Windows 8.1 (including the update) on a CD?.

Ominously, he mentioned something about a time limit which he said he would discuss with me on Thursday.

    So still waiting...............................

That's what I am afraid of...

Hmm the link should be working, try clicking here.
