KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

Echo Cleanup complete

folks waiting for that one, means you'll be unpatched until August and subject to security threats.

That's the really scary thing about this fiasco, what we're seeing on here in the "mere" thousand-odd posts are the highly technical users who know what Windows Update is and how to poke around with it.  A few days ago I went over to help out a neighbour with some computer issues and while I was waiting for something to download had a look at the WU log. It contained a long sequence of failed attempts to install the Update from Hel1. There are unknown, but probably large, numbers of people out there for whom Microsoft has effectively decreed that their Windows support ends on May 8.  These folks don't even know that there's a problem, and probably won't realise that they'll be running an unsupported product after that date.  For some reason this hasn't made the news yet, but it's possible it finally will (in a big way) once Microsoft unilaterally revokes support for a still-under-warranty product in a few days time.  I've told my neighbour to file a complaint with our government regulatory authority come May 8 for breach of the Sale of Goods Act. She's retired, it'll be more fun than her daytime soaps.

I'm wondering if using the current Windows Store 8.1 download perhaps does not even show the separate update, since it is now apparently embedded into the OS?

I still think the more relevant comparison is the list of installed packages, ordered by date installed:

This might not sort correctly if you don't use a sortable date format:

    dism /online /get-packages /format:table | sort /+125

Note that you may have to widen your  Administrator: Command Prompt window (e.g., via Alt-Space,P Layout)
