KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

Hi!

I tried to create System Tools folder as described in MR_CSharp post adding permissions etc. First I created "New folder" and when I tried to rename it "System Tools" I got pop up.

This destination already contains a folder named "Windows System".

If any files have the same names, you will be asked if you want to replace those file.

Do you still want to merge this system

   Windows System

   Date created 22.8.2013 1(:36

with this one

   New folder

   Date created 4.5.2014 12:10

If I use cmd and "dos-commands" I can see System Tools -folder under programs.

Does this tell something to you?

Also, I'm wondering if anyone has tried doing these things to an offline image in case actually doing things to the online image is what is causing any of the errors? At least then there would be less likelihood of interference from security products. <eg>

I've even tried using a Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation DVD (which supposedly has the update) as a source to repair the component store, but I got the same error.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:F:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess

Where F: is the DVD drive letter. The /LimitAccess parameter is supposed to prevent the program from looking at Windows Update for the files.

Has anyone on this board, who has successfully installed the KB2919355 update, tried to reclaim some hard disk space by running either Disk Cleanup w/System Files (including Windows Update files) or the DISM command: DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup ?

For me (and quite a few others), these commands appear to actually corrupt the component store (or report corruption) on some systems after the update. I have seen this reported on both 32 and 64 bit systems.

After running either of the above utilities, I try to run DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealthand I get the message "The component store is repairable"

Then, in efforts to repair the alleged corruption, I run DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthand I get the message "The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired. Error 0x800f081f".

I don't recommend trying this unless you have a good image backup of your system, including the 8.1 update.

I'm just trying to get a handle on the prevalence of this issue. Thanks.

I haven't been able to install the update but every time it fails I have to do all the DISM procedures etc to clean up my hard drive or else it puts more than an extra GB on the system for each failed install because MS in its characteristic illogical fashion doesn't clean up the failed installation on its own and doesn't use that file next time it attempts to install...instead it downloads another useless update.
