I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

...yes - but it says "...for Systems... without KB2919355" - so either there is another fix for the 355-patched systems, or the 355er already has the fix integrated (what I don't think).

I don't have 355 and that update was successfully installed yesterday.

problem with me is that /restorehealth does not work nor does it give error, it just goes forever in an infinite loop at 40% (I ran it for over 12 hours).

That would be a good reason to try using dism's extra logging options and use ProcMon to supplement whatever they imply.  No need to run it that long though.   <eg>

But "40%"?  WTH was it doing?  And did you first try the extra cleanup that Marek's amended script calls for?

    Ref.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825265.aspx

    (Microsoft search for

        dism  cleanup-image

    )

So both differences, Marek's approach and your symptom, make me wonder again about Virtual memory.  Has anybody done any tracking of that when these problem symptoms are happening?  (That example just reminded me that we have already seen a process which potentially could continue uselessly for as long as there was space to produce such messages.)

The answer to this post worked for me.  I have 8.1 Pro with Media Center.  I did get an error message on the /restorehealth command but I proceeded with the other commands which worked and I then did a manual installation which also worked.

The problem with me is that /restorehealth does not work nor does it give error, it just goes forever in an infinite loop at 40% (I ran it for over 12 hours).

Has anyone tried using /restorehealth with the Windows DVD as a repair source? If so, did it work and what are the ramifications?  Thanks
