KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

...yes - but it says "...for Systems... without KB2919355" - so either there is another fix for the 355-patched systems, or the 355er already has the fix integrated (what I don't think).

One does not have a system reserved partition if one upgraded from an older system or one has a bios that doesn't support UEFI (is my understanding)

No, Susan - you can set an UEFI-Bios to act like old standard Bios BEFORE installing the OS. Then 8(.1) does not create the hidden partition.

It is even possible to change back to UEFI at a later point (without reinstalling Windows) - the OS has to be prepared first, then restarted - at restart you immediately have to enter Bios and change the mode back to UEFI.

I installed 8.1 in standard (Bios-) mode, because from time to time I have to start live systems from USB/CD that don't support UEFI, so otherwise they won't boot.

Back to topic: Susan - I thank you for the work you do here and even if there are a bunch of users you could not help, your presence here gives us the feeling that we're not completely unheard :-)

I for myself will not update my system to 355, I'll wait until slipstreamed ISOs are available and then perhaps attempt to do a clean install.

Interesting though: today the hotcooked fix for the IE came up - on my system it's called "Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2964444) without KB2919355"... consider the last two ;-)

So is there a different patch for the 355ers?

I haven't been able to install the 355 update and I also had the patch for IE offered and I installed it.
