I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

Try this; it worked for me, after having tried many of the various 'fixes' out there over several days ... http://www.eightforums.com/windows-updates-activation/45441-update-kb2919355-finally-successful-after-multiple-fails.html

NB: I also did a 'clean boot' (turned off all all non-Microsoft services and disabled all startup tasks) before trying it. Don't know if it helped, but it was suggested as part of one of the earlier fixes, so I left it in place.

All that does is bring you back to a fix posted here that didn't work on my computer nor others' computers.  I really was hoping for a new fix that would actually work.

OK, 'scuse me for trying to help - I didn't say it was a 'cure all' - I just said it worked for me, after trying lots of other fixes. Or you could wait for MS to fix it, I guess (holds breath).

After weeks of reading all the posts and trying all of the posted "solutions" with no success and waisting a lot of hours, i finally found the reason for the failing update on one of my machines (8.1 Pro with Media Center, 64bit).

The reason was that the hidden System Reserved Partition of Windows 8.1 was full. It has a size of 350 MB and there was 0% free. So the update failed while trying to update components (e.g. the bootloader) in this partition (after the reboot during installation) and then rolled back the complete installation procedure.

I now extended the System Reserved Partion to 1000 MB and ran the update (Offline Installer) again.

And now, the update was successfully installed!

I hope this might help others still having problems in installing this update.

Is there a single place where we can get a single succinct update on what is happening?  (I'm even happier if there's several places, including for people who have some programming background.)

I suspect like many I'm finding:

    1. It's been a long time since this started, I've applied many approaches to this and it still keeps failing.
    2. My hardware supplier knows less than I do.
    3. I'm being threatened with a kick in the teeth in a few days when I can't keep my systems up to date.
    4. The support link (in the answer!) is a total waste of time, and that's after maybe an hour of trying to get through.
    5. I don't have time to wade through the off topic posts that are proliferating.
    6. The obvious web  links are a waste of rations.
    7. I'm simply not going to reinstall an OS.  Anybody who suggests that...
    8. ...

Well done to the brave MVP's who are doing a superb job here.
