I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

I changed to Firefox sometime ago and keep Internet Explorer for those Microsoft pages that need it.  In addition to WinVista, Win7 and Win8.1 Notebook and Desktop computers I also have Linux Mint 16 on a Notebook and a Desktop plus a MacBook Pro with OS X Mavericks.  I can run Firefox and the free LibreOffice on all the computers, not hard to change over.

I used to use Firefox but now use Chromium...and like you I only have IE even installed for those rare pages that do not display properly without it.  Yes, my husband uses Libre Office, Firefox, and Chromium.  He's using Kubuntu right now.  I'm not sure which Linux would be my flavor but there are so many I am sure I wouldn't have any problems migrating.  I have Win 7 on my desktop currently, but the 8.1 is on my laptop.  We have an old Vista computer that we are going to install Linux on.

P.S.  How a company treats customers in the support process makes that customer either an enemy of the company or lover of the company for life.

Microsoft is not making lovers here.  As a shareholder (not an employee mind you) this is where I'm most disappointed in how they are treating impacted folks.

I don't think suing anybody helps. it upsets both sides and blocks proper discussion. Susan's point is the best plan. they should be very embarrassed about their work on this Update. I expect the programmers are feeling very red under the collar.

Microsoft has an amazing history of producing software that runs on a huge range of computers. I don't know what happened this time.

my dell xps 8500 just refuses to update. just a year old. runs really well. just bought a sub to office 365 so I am their typical user. they have let me down badly. and to threaten me with a deadline is very rude.

Actually what a I think a lawsuit does is show the company that their business model is unacceptable and that they will end up losing financial gains because of it.  The few dollars each individual would gain is not the principle here.  I am already upset and I really don't think Microsoft cares.  Apparently MS thinks this issue is negligible because they haven't actually addressed it properly in three weeks.

I am a logical person.  I fail to understand the illogicality of this entire situation.  I don't understand why MS thought they could actually develop a viable cross-platform OS.  There are too many variables...some of which are glaringly evident here.  Why are they forcing people who don't want to update to update?  I was happy to use 8.1 with my keyboard and mouse...even though I don't use any of the "apps" myself nor a touch screen.  As far as an updater they've upgraded their updater in the past without a major update.  When service packs were implemented in the past they were available on a disc.  That's another thing that I take exception to as a consumer...the fact that most manufacturers now do not ship with installation or recovery media even when the PC is purchased new.  As a consumer I should not have to burn a recovery disk upon receiving the PC...no one should have to.  We pay more for goods while getting less.  I am tired of it and this is basically the straw that has broken the proverbial camel's back.

MS does not care and that's the bottom line.  That is not a logical way to run a business when you have competitors.  Linux is a very viable option and you do not pay for the OS itself.  My husband actually teased me about liking MS when he was very happy with his Linux systems.  I no longer feel that way.  Even if MS decides at this point to address this issue on a professional fix I no longer will be buying any MS product.  Next time it will be an Apple product or I will be gutting the OS on here and using Linux.  MS has taken 11 years of customer loyalty and flushed it down the toilet.  I know I am not the only one and if one watches the community forums it is simply increasing in volume which it will continue to do.  Not only that, from what I've also read in numerous threads those who were able to install 355 had some horrible issues after that point.  This update is a very poorly written one and that means that troubles that some haven't had will manifest in other ways in the future.  Vista was once the black sheep of the MS family however this update is proving worse.  To think that XP customers were pushed onto this makes it even worse.  MS has made a very big mistake and even if not one lawsuit is introduced they will pay for it financially.  Losing longtime customers bites you in the end...especially in the day of social media.

PS.  Now they're even too lazy to write a fix for the IE exploit.  Again, they want consumers to perform workarounds.  Way to go Microsoft!  You are officially the laughingstock of the IT world.
