KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

Actually, Joshua, you can indeed download the official legitimate 8.1 iso with a Windows 8 key -- there's a well-documented procedure to do it... Here's just one link among many telling how: http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-download-the-official-microsoft-windows-8-1-iso/

I did this myself long before the update. I'm now tempted to do it again, because I suspect MS may have updated the 8.1 iso to include the 355 upgrade, already streamed in (they did it on the MSDN 8.1 iso, so I have to wonder, why wouldn't they do it here as well?)

Hmmm. I guess I thought your machine was dead in the water. Sorry.

When you created your OEM recovery media you had to burn to a DVD. Is that right? So, assuming you had to burn the DVD, the Manufacturer of your computer used files from the hard drive to create the recovery media. Unless you've done something exceedingly extreme the files the OEM used should still be there.

Can you boot into the efi / uefi or bios on the machine? Tool around in there to see if the manufacturer setup some kind of recovery system. The OEM recovery DVD is for extreme cases when the hard drive experiences catastrophic failure so you may still the have the OEM image on a partition on your hard drive. Boot to efi, restore the OEM operating system with OEM key.

So if your machine is dead:

Get the OEM OS working and don't worry about getting the upgrades and other updates until later. Your keys are still good once you have the right version to install.

No, I do not even get that far. I boot from the recovery media, work my way through the menus to either a refresh or reinstall, and then it says my recovery media is invalid. The recovery media is all I have, I can't download an iso with my keys. So I am dead in the water until Microsoft releases a fix.

You can't download the 8.1 iso with the 8 key... and ON TOP of all of that, I bought Windows Media Center (before it was free for a short period, I forked over the $15) and after you buy and install that, it changed your Key yet again from the one you originally used, so whenever you do reinstall windows the key you used to download the ISO doesn't actually let you register so you have to contact windows answerdesk for them to activate your windows.

So I am with you, I will wait for a fix.

Edit** Should mention I did a clean install 2 months ago.
