KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

There may be a better option than a "Clean Install" when all else fails.

That is to to an inplace "upgrade".  This would leave installed drivers and installed programs intact thus not requiring re-installing all drivers and programs.  This should work as long as the problem is with "uSoft" and not an incompatability of an installed program or 3rd party driver.

Used this method with Windows 7 on my wife's system when an update failed and NO solution could be found.

Do NOT know if you can use a "OEM" version of windows 8.1 to do an UPGRADE to your existing Windows 8.1 (Where your Key is the same as existing Key).  Seems GOOD old uSoft removed some features (work-a-round) to fix THEIR problems.

It's problems like this that are going to hurt uSofts bottomline, as thoes running Windows 7 will see this as ANOTHER reason to AVOID Win 8.  As my wife says "No way in Hxxx" will she migrate to Win 8.  This also impacts NEW computer purchases as this "forces" the user to Win 8.

PS:  I have two laptops (one 17" touch screen and an older SB notebook) and One desktop that Im running Windows 8.1  KB2919355 failed on all three systems.  Dism fixed the two laptops, but HAVE not been able to fix the desktop.

Remember uSoft, that users that have "BIG" problems, Talk and that means friends and family members Here these problems.

Old saying is that a dissatisfed coustomer KILLS the sale of ten others!!!!

Only got some of the names because at first I didn't realize how bad of an issue this was so didn't ask for names. The guy that laughed at me was Mudip. He wouldn't give me a last name. The guy that transferred me to him was Vikas Sachdevnani (which I'm sure is not his actual name because he didn't know how to spell it at first.)  Another guy was Puneet.

In the past week, I've spoken with 4 MS level 1 techs and 2 level 2 techs regarding the 2919355 issue. None of them seemed aware that this was a problem. None of them were able to help in any way except to tell me that I needed to reset and to contact manufacturer if anything further is needed. That was all I was able to accomplish after 22 hours of trying to get this update to install. I did speak to an MS support manager and said that they need to reimburse me for the time I've put into this. He laughed at me.

You got any names? This isn't Linux. Its Windows, we pay for licensing and functional use. There is no way in heck they could ever run the OS as a subscription. Not with them laughing about failure impact on customers and the actual lawsuits.
