I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

cleanmgr.exe

Echo Cleanup complete

PS: I have now windows 8.1 dvd because I succeeded to download it yesterday. But reinstallation if I loose all my programs and setting would be horrible an take huge time.

As far as that troubleshooter goes I had the same exact message...twice.  I am not totally reinstalling though.  MS needs to address this issue and quickly.

If the DVD you created from the downloaded ISO file is like the retail DVD, you should be able to perform a repair install.  While you are in your current Windows session, run the setup file on the DVD and it should just re-install Windows over itself and maintain all your files, settings and programs.  Of course, I'd suggest imaging your drive beforehand, just to be on the safe side.

Open a ticket with Microsoft. That's about all you can do short of reformatting your pc. Also why on earth are you running a 32gb page file?

MS will not help you.  I've talked to three techs.  They couldn't do anything except recommend a refresh or to wait for the hotfix.  I am waiting for the hotfix.

    Hi!

I have done many trials to get update 1 installed without success.

I have desktop PC. Motherboard Asus P8z77-v running windows 8.1 pro with media center (x64). It has intel core I7 and 32 GB ram. Installation is quite "standard" but page file is not on c-drive because I have 120 GB ssd-drive and it has not enough space for page file, because it is 32 GB.

Today I tried to update again. I followed Marek’s action list carefully.

Everything went ok, but MS fix for windows gave warning “Missing / corrupt files detected”. See attached picture. Maybe this is the reason. But I don’t know which files are corrupted.

Anyway I proceed to install KB2919355 separately.

Installation was successful and after it update asked reboot. And I accepted it.

Everything goes ok and fast until after reboot 75 % is reached. Then it starts hanging. I see disk activity led blinking so something is happening.

After 20 minutes from reboot start PC reboots again and does another try. Again it reaches 75 % and then reboots.

Now it tells “Failure configuring Windows. Reverting updates”. After several reboots Windows opens and version is same as before starting this update trial. All restore points are lost and in “Windows update” update history is empty. I can see installed updates by clicking link “installed updates”.

Now I have done during several days tries to update, seeking help in MS community, but now I’m in stuck.

I have saved after this update logs: windows update, cbs and dism, but I cannot investigate them so that I am able to find solution or what to try next.

    What to do now?

    Best regards

    Laakspen
