KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

    I am sure you are probably not allowed to tell us exactly where you found the ISO, but can you give us hints as to what the hoops were?  I am dead in the water after Windows corrupted my install and my recovery media.

    You know, I could not find an official link to 8.1 ISO for downloading (THANKS MICROSOFT!!!)

    But there is a well publicized "hack" workaround which worked fine.

    Google "8.1 ISO download" for details...

    In a nutshell: download tiny 8.0 and 8.1 installer files to your hard drive.

    Then run the 8.0 and when its hits 1% downloaded, cancel it.

    Then run the 8.1 installer - it will error out.

    Run the 8.1 installer a second time! Yep, it will work.

    When the download is finally finished then you will be prompted to either install right away, or simply make MEDIA. (there ya have it, an 8.1 ISO file...)

    No-one should ever have to buy their operating system TWICE.

    The information is not widely accessible to the general public, but you can use a Generic Key to install win8, and then after it is installed - ACTIVATE it with your paid key. 

    I was able (after jumping though hoops) to download an 8.1 ISO, and installed it with the generic key. Then I activated it with the key from my original 8.0 install media. It worked fine!

    Was enormously lucky to come across both a process for downloading the ISO, and a link to the (quite well hidden) page with official Generic Keys for 'corporate' installation purposes.

    MS should have the latest ISO download links AND generic installer keys clearly posted to the public in the most obvious places. AFTER ALL- WE OWN THE ACTIVATION KEY. The activation software quite effectively prevents one key being used on multiple machines. Since you already purchased the activation key, then the media and (frankly redundant)  'installer key' should always be available. 

    Downloading 8.1 ISO and doing an 'in-place update" was the ONLY way I was able to fix the KB2919355 debacle...

    It's very unfortunate that some people have to resort to BUYING another copy of the media, thanks to a disastrous "rogue update". Windows ISOs should be made available for loan from public libraries...

    The thing is I have heard that some people who have tried that couldn't get the generic key to work.  I also have read of horror stories of what has happened to systems after it was installed successfully.  I really don't want the update.  I shouldn't be forced to install it.

    The keys are what is referred to as KMS or VLK keys meaning key management services or Volume license keys. There intended for organizations with specialized servers to validate large amounts of installations of windows in an organization. As such I can guarantee you they work, I use them in my day to day employment as well as at home with no issues. As to getting your existing key to work after using this I cant say. 

    Exactly.  No one can guarantee anything which is why I am going to wait for a hotfix.

    But still no sign of the actual ISO on that page.  Windows claims my recovery media is invalid, so I am dead in the water without some sort of media.
