KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

No-one should ever have to buy their operating system TWICE.

The information is not widely accessible to the general public, but you can use a Generic Key to install win8, and then after it is installed - ACTIVATE it with your paid key.

I was able (after jumping though hoops) to download an 8.1 ISO, and installed it with the generic key. Then I activated it with the key from my original 8.0 install media. It worked fine!

Was enormously lucky to come across both a process for downloading the ISO, and a link to the (quite well hidden) page with official Generic Keys for 'corporate' installation purposes.

MS should have the latest ISO download links AND generic installer keys clearly posted to the public in the most obvious places. AFTER ALL- WE OWN THE ACTIVATION KEY. The activation software quite effectively prevents one key being used on multiple machines. Since you already purchased the activation key, then the media and (frankly redundant) 'installer key' should always be available.

Downloading 8.1 ISO and doing an 'in-place update" was the ONLY way I was able to fix the KB2919355 debacle...

It's very unfortunate that some people have to resort to BUYING another copy of the media, thanks to a disastrous "rogue update". Windows ISOs should be made available for loan from public libraries...

To all Community Members who successfully installed Windows 8.1 Update via Windows Update or who still have to install it

Could you please let us know if Windows Update showed or is showing you one update only (2919355) or 5 updates (2919355, 2932046, 2934018, 2137592 and 2938439)?

According to Susan Bradley, Windows Update should show just 2919355.

However, my experience on two PCs is that Windows Update showed 5 updates (2919355, 2932046, 2934018, 2137592 and 2938439).

This is also the experience I gathered from other people.

If possible, please post a screen shot either if you still haven't installed Windows 8.1 Update and you are still seeing these five updates being offered up via WU, or if you have already installed it (in that case, installed updates are visible via View update history).

This should help Susan gather some additional info.

reimaged win8.1 to two days before the 8.1u1 release, just had the one kb...355 main update that time think it was 800m prox ....

Previous update 1 was maybe in 600mb range with a follow update of 200mb prox... and a final 2.8mb all with the same kb...355 number.
