KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

There is a post on thehotfixscare.net that seems to indicate, if it is accurate, that Liz and I are indeed screwed:

"The April 2014 update provides sorely-needed and long-overdue improvements in Windows 8.1's stability and reliability. In my opinion, it brings Windows 8.1 to the level of Beta-quality software -- finally usable on a day-to-day basis, although still buggy.

One major problem with the April 2014 update is a bug where the Component Store can be corrupted. There are two scenarios of which you need to be aware:

    1. If you have not yet installed kb2919355, you should, at an elevated Command Prompt, issue the following command:

    dism /online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Should corruption be detected, you should (again at an elevated Command Prompt) type:

    dism /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If Windows 8.1's Component Store is for whatever reason corrupted before you install the April 2014 update, you absolutely need to repair it before installing it, or a new bug in kb2919355 will make it impossible to repair the corruption -- ultimately resulting in the need to re-format.

    1. If you have already installed kb2919355, you need to check if your Component Store is already corrupted, using the ScanHealth command as in scenario 1 above. If your Component Store is, in fact, corrupted, you need to then run the RestoreHealth command as above. If the RestoreHealth command reports that it is unable to repair the Component Store, you need to use System Restore to back out to a point before installing kb2919355, and then re-issue the RestoreHealth command. At that point it should be able to repair the Component Store. You may then re-install kb2919355 and should experience no further Component Store issues, so long as you DO NOT RUN:

    dism /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

After kb2919355 is installed, you MUST NOT use StartComponentCleanup, as that command actually CAUSES Component Store corruption."

Of course I have run StartComponentCleanup multiple times as it has often been suggested in this thread.

Which brings us back to: Is there no way to just wipe out the Component Store completely, let Windows Update re-download all updates to bring it back up to date, and move forward?

Like Liz, I am still not working.  I am replying to hers because of all the people here, her symptoms match mine the closest... maybe there is some similarity?

I have an ASUS Q501LA.  It came with Windows 8 x64 with Media Center on it.  Because I immediately disliked Windows 8, I have rarely used the laptop.  It has, however, been updated regularly.  I purchased a key to upgrade it to Windows 8 Pro, and then upgraded to 8.1 via the Store.

    DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355 finds nothing.

DISM /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd646.3.1.14 tells me that Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd646.3.1.14 is not a valid package.

DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth tells me that the copmponent store is fixable.

DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth tells me that the store is corrupted or the source could not be found.

Like Liz, executing all these commands at some point told me that my system was last updated "never" but after a few reboots my update history did reappear.

    KB2919442 is installed.

The Windows Update Troubleshooter tells me that recent updates were not installed and that it did not repair them.

I can find instructions online to rebuild my component store with an installation CD but of course nobody ships those anymore.

I have no VPN clients installed, nor am I missing a System Tools folder.

I have no available restore points.

    I will not reinstall Windows.

Does anyone know the address for Microsoft's accounting department?  I am going to start billing them my hourly rate for the time I am spending on this.

Will this install on WIndows 8.1 Pro with Media Center.

Have 64-bit updates and 64-bit Media Center, but when you try to update, get the message that this update isn't for this version?

    Is that correct?

Is there a separate version for Media center, cause these files installed on other 64-bit WIndows Pro (without media center).

I got the same problem. There isn't a valid Media Center Pro x64 iso.

What's worse, refresh doesn't work either.

    No valid recovery media.

So... All I can do is a full format due to bad Windows Updates and a bad version licensing structure.

Except I'll have to start all the way back to 8.0 Pro because of the crappy registration key issues they have.

No mistakes on my part. Just MS feels comfortable in thinking I don't have anything better to do with my time except pay them to Beta test.

Mind you, I do thank the attempts for trying to help. But most of us have our backs to the wall.

Uninstalling updates a month back and letting Windows Updates re-install, doesn't fix the error. It comes right back. Repair doesn't work, Refresh doesn't work. The suggestions, don't work. The full package doesn't have an ISO to repair itself.

What scares me even worse is the XP replacement machines, all 8 of them, are touchscreen 17" laptops with the 8.1 Pro Pack Media Center installations. XP is still working, these machines are working. But unable to be stable with this update issue?
