KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

I think MS was ambitious, but too greedy. They could have made a killing with RT Surface units if they would have let Cisco write a VPN client for them in the last 2 years since Cisco made the request. Too many large corporate, government, and non profits would have adopted them happily and easily. They have no one to blame but themselves at this point for the poor earnings and adoption. 8 Pro has proven time and again to be over complicated, overweight, power hungry, and therefore cost ineffective.

It will take some time for them to recover. They need to continue working with the Beta testers instead of assuming they know better than the end users. That was what made 7 successful.

this success story proves to me that the update is very strangely written.

i personly think all the sfc, dism procedures are a complete waste of time if your actual system is not exactly matching the ones ms tested it on.

i refuse to do a repair install on my dell XPS 8500, as there is nothing wrong with my equipment.

the biggest mistake of all this fuss is that when your machine is updated it will look and feel very much the same. i have been using an updated laptop for days now and i cant really see much difference. load of rubbish really.

more than anything else i feel hugely let down by Microsoft. very very sad they used to be so reliable and friendly. cheers mart

I agree, the registration for the license forces many hours of reversion and updates for what was already validly licensed. Furthermore, on a working dual boot on dual 256 SSD laptop between Win 7 Pro and Win 8.1.1 Pro Media Center; Windows 7 Pro, with more program installations, boots and runs faster than 8.1.1 Pro. This is both frustrating and disappointing. The repair and recovery of 7 is much smoother and less problematic than 8.1. We can mince the volume of 7's updates, but the over complications of 8's core design is nothing I would want in an IT environment. I've been forced to implement it though due to over priced burdens introduced by OEM manufacturers due to the developmental compensation required. I think the update is a Beta, not an update. A few things introduced, but everything leads to more costs and complications with less productive results for business.
