KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

Echo Cleanup complete

Uninstalling Cisco VPN Client fixed mine too !!!  Thanks Voja for figuring it out and posting, and John for posting also since it bumped the post for me to see!  I tried so many times, and the manual install always got so darn close 99% then reverted back

    • so frustrating.

Initially, after uninstalling Cisco VPN Client, I started using the automated windows update and it seemed to hang at 3% during download and network activity stopped just like all the other failed attempts, so I cancelled it after waiting a few minutes,  Maybe it would have succeeded, but I didn't want to go through cleaning everything again, and still had the manual install file which worked perfectly.  I did also run all the DISM.exe recommended commands again.

So interestingly, after the successful manual install of KB2919355 and reboot, windows update wanted to install it again, but it was only 150MB or something - much smaller.  Ok, I see why it wanted to install again... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2919355

See Note 5. "Windows Update may offer update 2919355 again even when the computer already have update 2919355 installed. This is expected and is in order to resolve a Windows Update client issue. Windows Update only installs the additional fixes for Windows Update clients instead of all the Windows 8.1 update packages. "

However, when I tried to re-install Cisco VPN Client, it failed.  Had to hunt down another solution.  Needed to run Citrix WinFix.exe and run Citrix "DNE" update to get the VPN client working again.  http://www.citrix.com/go/lp/dne.html  So maybe "Uninstall VPN Clients" should be added to the work-around that's floating around?  I've seen at least 4 people now have success after uninstalling it.

Hmmm, just for kicks I ran the /ScanHealth option of DISM.exe and it said store is repairable, and the /RestoreHealth failed, and the /StartComponentCleanup failed.  Well, guess I won't worry about it since everything else is updated and working now - maybe next windows update I'll see if there are problems then.

QUESTION: When I ran the manual install for win8.1 update (355), I did not install the other files that were also on the download page (KB2919442,KB2932046,KB2959977,KB2937592,KB2938439,KB2934018).  With the exception of 442 (already installed 3/19), and 977 (installed today, I think by Windows update after the mess resolved), the others are not installed, not available in Windows update, and I can find no reference to them anywhere other than as part of 355 update.  Should I manually install them as well?

I checked WU and all the files were gone except for [KB9219355]. BUT when I check update history, [KB9219355] is there and says installed successfully.

Is KB9219355 listed in Installed Updates*?* [YES/NO]

    NO.

Then KB2919355 is not installed, despite what Update History says.
