KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

    Looks like you should install the additional 355 update according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2919355 -

    See note 5.

    Windows Update may offer update 2919355 again even when the computer already have update 2919355 installed. This is expected and is in order to resolve a Windows Update client issue. Windows Update only installs the additional fixes for Windows Update clients instead of all the Windows 8.1 update packages.

    I installed it again, and it worked for me (after getting everything fixed from the initial update - my issue resolved when I uninstalled Cisco VPN Client). I wondered what is was for also, but when I noticed the smaller size I figured it was to fix something.  Although with all the issues of getting the main update installed, maybe wait a week or so?  Up to you.

    Yeah, the distinction between 32-bit and 64-bit can be confusing. But if you see "64-bit operating system" in the system properties, as you mentioned, then you're definitely using a 64-bit processor. To clarify a couple things:

    • The "system32" folder is called "system32" regardless of processor type, so you don't need to worry about that.
    • "amd64" refers to 64-bit processors, regardless of whether they were manufactured by Intel or AMD. It's called "amd64" since AMD was the first company to sell the current form of 64-bit processors (Intel later licensed AMD's design).

    All of this is true regardless of your Windows version -- nothing to do with Windows 8 specifically.

    By the way, I should also mention that I was finally able to get 2919355 to install by adding the "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools" folder as others have recommended. Will post more details soon, but things seem to be okay now.

    Thanks jvd for clearing that up. I think you mentioned the addition of a System Tools folder earlier, but I don't even have a Program Data folder. My system goes C:\Windows\ and even here I don't have a Start Menu folder...

    So this is where I get scared because although I realize and appreciate everyone's good intentions, my system is running fine without all these other "stabs" at fixing it in order to accept the 355 update. And if my OS is 64 bit then why did the DISM command (dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14) fail?
