I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

It was Malwarebytes Free. I only did on demand scanning with it - it wasn't running all the time. MS support said to uninstall it anyway.

    Thank you.

To MW and anyone else that I've recently opened a case for.  I thank you for being patient and ask that you be patient a little longer.  It's because you are the "problem children" that I need you to be patient.  Because the 'canned' list of things to try to fix this isn't working I really need Microsoft to look at you and see what's up with your box.  We have gone through what I call phase 1 - the early bodies.  And as a result there's now a canned 'try this' that is working for quite a few people.  But now we are in phase 2 - those folks that are harder to fix.  So thank you for being patient and hang in there just a little bit longer.

TEN DAYS is long enough, don'cha think?

I'd really like for the front page of microsoft.com to read:

    WE'RE SORRY...

and go on to explain exactly what has happened, and how to fix this problem and get back to 100% reliable operation on ALL of our machines.

I used to think that Apple tech support was USELESS (it still is) - but now I realize that at least their OS isn't UNRELIABLE, as windows is rapidly  becoming. What's the point of all this great, responsive support, when nobody in the company knows how to fix anything?? (due to 20 years of poor OS design decisions...)

AGREED!!!   Also MS...we shouldn't have to perform dx procedures...we shouldn't have to resize our partitions, we shouldn't have to reinstall update components, we shouldn't have to roll back our systems, we shouldn't have to go back to a system restore point, or buy an ISO key.   WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING WITH OUR EXISTING SYSTEM EXCEPT ENABLE THE BUILT-IN UPDATE UTILITY TO RECEIVE AND INSTALL AUTOMATIC UPDATES.  IF NUMEROUS CUSTOMERS WITH ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES CANNOT INSTALL A MANDATORY UPDATE IT IS BECAUSE MICROSOFT SCREWED UP.  NOW ADMIT YOUR FAILURE MICROSOFT AND ISSUE A PATCH ALREADY!!! IT'S BEEN 10 DAYS SINCE THIS FIASCO BEGAN AND TWO TECHS AND NUMEROUS ATTEMPTED INSTALLATIONS LATER(honestly have lost track of how many times...I think it's been 10) I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO INSTALL THIS 'UPDATE.'  I AM IRED BY THE FACT THAT MS HAS NOT MADE A PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT, APOLOGIZED TO THE AFFECTED CONSUMER NOR ISSUED AN APPROPRIATE PATCH.  ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
